Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Xbox360 Q&A

GR: A question that is surely in everyone's mind is did Bethesda program the game with a persistent world like Morrowind. In other words, will the game weather, time of day, and climate change? If so, are these changes based on events in the game, are they random, or are they pre-programmed?

PH: The game has a full day/night light cycle. So the sun and moons will rise and set every day and dynamically move across the sky. The weather is region based, so different parts of Cyrodiil will be more likely to have some kinds of weather than others. For example, it snows more in the north. As you travel around you’ll see the weather change from one type to another. It’ll be partly cloudy, then some clouds will roll in, then it’s drizzling, then you’re caught in a heavy thunderstorm. We use a dual-layered system in Oblivion to more realistically transition between different types of weather and to better model the way clouds move in the sky.

GR: In the previous Elder Scrolls games, players could literally spends hours and a ton of money creating and upgrading spells and items. In Oblivion is that still true? Are there still certain items and spells that can only be obtained with perseverance and hard work? On the other hand are there still spells and items that will be available to players who do not wish to spend many hours and much money that will be just as useful?

PH: Yes, you can still spend lots of time doing that sort of thing, but much of it requires you to spend time and effort improving the skills related to that skill, whether it be enchanting, alchemy, armorer, destruction magic, or whatever. As you improve each of your skills you’ll reach different levels of ability that will unlock new things you can do with that skill, such as the ability to repair magic armor and weapons or to create new spells. Or, as you say, you can simply go and buy new spells or items from vendors, or you’ll find scrolls in the world that allow you to cast different spells. And you’ll always be finding new types of armor, weapons, and different items as you explore the world, and these items will level with you so that as your character gets better, so does the loot you find.

GR: Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions for us, is there anything you would like to say to our readers?

PH: Thanks for your support and interest in Oblivion. We do appreciate it and look forward to getting the game in your hands as soon as we can.

As you can see, Bethesda is hard at work on bringing this title to us as soon as possible. I know many of you were upset that it was delayed, but if it brings us a more complete and bug-free title, it is surely worth it. Once again, we thank Bethesda and Pete Hines for taking the time to speak with us.
