Well, Sony President of Worldwide Studios, Phil Harrison has given his keynote speech at GDC, and here is the gist of it.A God of War II: Divine Retribution trailer was shown at first. It showed Kratos ripping out the eye out of a cyclops' head, riding on a phoenix and ripping its wings off, and tearingapart a wild boar. It looked impressive for the PS2. Phil then went on to the PSP. The PSP is the fastest growing Sony platform to date. User will be able to view RSS feeds on the next PSP auto update. Sony will push the GPS and the Eye Toy very strongly. GPS to arrive next winter, along with a network update this summer. Eye To to arrive this fall. Development tools for PSP are now just $5,000 making it cheaper to develop for.
On to the Playstation 3! A bunch of PS3 demos were shown. On showed thousands of fish moving around underwater in shoals, with accurately modeled water and sunrays penetrating the surface. A demo was shown that looked very similar to Ninety Nine Nights (this was actually Heavenly Sword). Another demo was shown from the SCEE London team. This showed a detailed car model which got shot full of holes (with everything modeled accurately). The bullet holes had realistically flaking paint, shattering windows, and falling parts (this is from an unannounced game according to Phil). Ted Price from Insomniac Games took the stage at one point and showed off a new game with huge weapons and environments. A futuristic city was shown which conatined a blimp that said Ratchet and Clank, robots and aircars abounded. Apparently their first PS3 game, the I-8 project, is now called Resistance: Fall of Man. Lastly a demo of Warhawk was shown, which looked great. A full demo will be available at E3 this year. The benefits of using next-gen DVD technology such as increased space and uncompressed textures was discussed. Blu-ray will allow publishers to launch games on a single disc for every global market, so one SKU for the whole world, Harrison added. Interesting to not that Both NTSC and PAL games will be in full 1080p resolution. On to the PS network info. Firstly, a broadband connection will be required. The HDD ia included after all, which is important because there will be somethign very similar to the Xbox Live Arcade. Game applications can be launched direct from the hard disk -- total digital distribution is feasible and is a Sony long-term goal apparently. "PlayStation Network Platform", which is an internal name will be a global gaming network. The PS3 will be WiFi connection capable so WiFi users do not fear. If "capable" means included or add-on has yet to be revealed.A work-in-progress picture of the network system was displayed, with video chat windows overlaid on games. Emails and such can be sent without leaving games jsut like Xbox Live. Online shops within MotorStorm and F1 were shown, integrated with the game's own graphical style. Gamers can download new cars, tracks etc. on the fly. Popup notifications and other XBox-Live-esque features will be part of the service. The standard services will be entirely free - no definition on what "standard" means yet, though. Another interesting thing to note is that third-party developers will be able to connect their servers to the networks. This means MMORPGs, people.Visit www.playstation.com/beyond to submit your game ideas, to Sony. |

Which one was the better one, 1080p or 1080i?I find it hard to believe that all will be on the better one (if 1080p is better). Most likely most of the games will be 720p or i, whatever.
Hurray for Heavenly Sword! The most interesting game for PS3 atm!

1080p - great. Except there are next to zero TVs capable of accepting 1080p input.

The Future screens that are going to be on the market with 1080p is when you gona ask for such features...consider the next 5-6 years.Or your PC monitor with hdmi-to-dvi adapter.

The game is Resistance: Fall of Man (the Insomniac game, I mean), not Ratchet.
Oh, they showed a Ratchet demo too (sorry, I'm checking this other site which wrote only about Resistance)

Well I wont mind paying $500 usd if the PS3 comes with a 60gb hdd, blu ray and everything else it is going to have.

But I'll be shocked if the PS3 comes with a HDMI cable - a decent one at Best Buy cost 150 dollars US!!!!It'll suck if you have to buy one (add that to your $500 console price tag). But if Sony does include one, it'll ahve to be a cheapy and will likely not be so hot...

What a complete joke.... sony AGAIN showing all this realtime DEMO footage. If 360 devs wanted to show that crap they could do it as well where is the ACTUAL GAMEPLAY. All sony is giving us is a bunch of ati ruby type demos not showing anything do they expect people to believe heavenly sword and all that stuff shown will be anything like that when we are playing it?
Anyway 1080p is impossible the ps3's videocard isn't powerful enough to run it check the untold legend website they even say 720p 1080i for the games. No ps3 games will be able to run stable at 1080p and looks as good as lets say mgs4 it wont happen. 720p for mgs4 720p for killzone.
Another thing sony doesn't tell people is that currently 1080p at HIGHER than 30fps is IMPOSSIBLE. Not even the most expensive equipment out there can record at 1080p 60fps far too much bandwidth nothing currently does it. Its either going to be 24fps 1080p or 30fps 1080p (great for movie playback)The best resolution for next gen gaming is 720p.
1080p isn't even currently an hdtv standard.. it hasn't been listed next to 720p 1080i as standards yet it takes years to become a standard. Check ign they showed all this real time (ati ruby) type crap and nothing playable. This is truly sad will they drop the bomb at e3 that NONE of the games actually look like that?

If Sony can deliver what they claim it seems like a bright future for the PS3 and the xbox 360 (since they'll both try to out do each other, gamers win!). Anyways on the whole 1080p thing it seems to me like it's more of a up conversion more than games playing at a native 1080P.

Check gaming age the stuf is FAR off from the target videos.Actual quotes " Another tech demo was shown and co-developed with Ninja Theory which had a thousand characters reacting to complex rag doll physics. The graphics were all PS2-caliber with nice post processing effects such as depth of field."" Warhawk, while looking great, was essentially a barren section of ocean with a lot of fighter ships (they were aiming for a hundred for the final game) going around destroying larger vessels and some nice looking water (wave simulation with procedural animation) and clouds (volumetric raytracing). Overall it was a great demo but a far cry of what was shown last year and gave a nice sobering introduction to the rest of the demos which was shown towards the end. Fortunately it will be playable at E3."
" Next up was Motorstorm and just like Warhawk was no where near the E3 target render. The car models and physics were decent although the texturing and the environment was PS2 level of quality. The real star of the demonstration was the deformable terrain which worked quite well with the physics of the cars. The demo also had HDR, post processing effects, and occlusion."Finally sony's nonsense is starting to come out. There are screenshots up on some sites of motorstorm and its NOTHING graphically compared to graw. Hopefully sony shows better at E3.

Well, didn't the final dev kits just get shipped out? I bet these games look a million times better come October. I just wish they'd show some games that I was actually interested in. I'm not a MGS fan, the next Final Fantasy game probably won't come out for a long time, Devil May Cry is a alright, God of War 2 is going to the PS2, GTA will probably no longer be exclusive to the PS3 first, who knows when Gran Turismo 5 will come out, Tekken is stale, there won't be another Katamari game, Smackdown vs. Raw will probably be amazing though.

Wait a minute optaviusx, you sounds like as if you where actually there, watching the videos and the demos...Im not making judgement till i see them myself. Also lets not forget this is not E3..its Games Developers Conference, this is where things technical features and these types technical demos are shown.....I dont know what you where expecting or made those assumptions to you. Also this post is very water-down and missed some crucial points. I dont know where in this article it mentions anything about 1080p, where are you getting that from. It wasnt part of this post.
Let stop assuming 1080p will be native, Sony has not denied it may be achieving 1080p via up-scaling/or converting...the CELL+RSX for the PS3 is capable of it. The implimentaion is down to the DEVS, if they want to consume extra time to go through the process of making a 1080p native...it does not mean its not possible... for example, like how PGR3 upconvertes its signal for the Xbox360.
If you want to know about the 1080p and frame rate issue, one reason why PS3 date was changed dates, was due to the next-gen of HDMI..you might want to check out the specs for that. Yes they will be pushing for 1080p just like any company will boast thier advantages...it a battle so they have to fight the fight and better one another. 1080p is true for the Movies...not yet for the games...but that does not mean it wont happen in the future...you hyping yourself up and jumping to the conclusion...each company is selling you the vision and plan for the consoles future. E.g. you know for sure that the first gen titles will not take advantage of the console capabilities as DEVs are familirising with the console, it does not reflect the full potentional capabilities...You get what I mean.
As for the games not living up to their expectations....well you might want to take various points of views before picking you favourite anti/negative quotes and using that as you basis for a conclusion. If you look around the net and read the various articles from the speech and several different opinions becuase that what they are, you will come to a better understanding, you have not seen the footage so lets make judgement then, rather than forecasting points which you know do not reflect everyones opinion. For instance read the IGN coverage, the Eurogamer article, Gamespot coverage, Playsyde, 1up.
I think you using E3 is a benchmark too much...since you can tell that E3 video where Real-time CG on hardware, surely after so many years of gaming you would know the difference between CG and IN-Game footage. To know what your watching and what purpose it is used for. You see it Game intros, cut-scenes, adverts and trailers. Even the casual gamers can tell the difference and know how CG works and how it works. I dont know anyone who thinks the footage at E3 is going to be exactly like what you saw at E3. I dont think that was the intention by the DEVS either...they have mentioned many times that what was at E3 is the representation of what the games will be like, the experience and their vision of their IP's. Your obviously going to hear the Execs talk up as much as they can, you can dis-regard that if you want.
"Execs" as in the Sony executives... ^^
