Sony Caught Red Handed Faking Blu-Ray Demo >
2006/05/16 15:15:19: Posted by purbeast
As if Sony isn't getting enough bad publicity already, this latest stunt isn't going to help them make it any better. They recently had a 10 year anniversary party for the Vaio which showed a new Vaio that has a built in Blu-Ray drive. However a reporter himself caught them red-handed, and found the movie was actually playing off of a normal old DVD+R. Click the link for the full article.

Does your Sony 50 inch Tv support 1080p Optaviusx?
Written by whYte420 (113) on 2006/05/16

I hate everything Sony has to offer besides there TV's.
Written by Ps.....3 on 2006/05/16

*Edited: No Cursing. Do not try to go around it either, I read all this. Warned. Thanks.*
Written by optaviusx on 2006/05/16

No it doesn't support 1080p lol It only supports 720p 1080i tops. Practically all sony hdtvs I've seen don't even go to 1080p.
Written by Itaintrite on 2006/05/16

Eh, I don't see how this is significant at all. So what if Bluray wasn't ready at the party. It's not even out yet. Will this affect the PS3 launch which is 6 months away? No. Everybody lies. As long as the final product is good right?
Written by Ps.....3 on 2006/05/16

right "O" chap
Written by optaviusx on 2006/05/16

You're right its all about the final product, but good decisions can help their case in the end, but bad decisions tends to linger and have a way of creeping up and biting ya in the ass later on.

Like Microsoft deciding to turn down GTA as an exclusive and not deciding to cater more to ninja theory's needs as a developer and ended up losing heavenly sword which was suppose to be a 360 exclusive. What is Microsoft's latest and greatest screw up? FORCING SILIKON KNIGHTS TO SHOW TOO HUMAN AT E3 WHEN SK DIDN'T FEEL IT WAS THE RIGHT TIME! and as a result have gotten the game quite a bit of bad publicity. The game will be great in the end, but Microsoft hasn't done too human any favors by forcing a showing.

Like Microsoft's decision to not take

Well lets just say they have made another huge mistake that you guys will find out about later :/
Written by Mash (118) on 2006/05/16

The mistake is they broke the law lol not if the technology is ready in time.
Written by big m (11) on 2006/05/16

and you optaviusx are some1 tht really know the truth behind too homan:)poor u:)
Written by optaviusx on 2006/05/16

Denis Dyack said himself they weren't ready to show it at E3, but you guys saw the big too human thing setup at Microsoft's booth they didn't want the area to not have too human there, but denis dyack was very disappointed with the state of too human at E3. He said the state its in is barely an alpha they have later stuff of course, but they had to make a demo specifically for E3 like epic did for gears of war surprisingly in only 2 to 3 weeks time. They couldn't bring a build they already had which would have over 40% of the game and then allow people to play it freely on the showfloor. I expect a strong tgs showing for too human if not it'll be delayed.

OMG LIARS....****Runs to the local Sony store & eggs them***
Written by Smarty Pants (291) on 2006/05/16

In 2 years time (tops) you will all be loading your BD players with the latest flick in HD. That HD-DVD add-on will be a paper weight and this 'incident' will be a distant memory.

Now, when is Sony gonna release a 32 inch, 1080p Bravia?
Written by Ps.....3 on 2006/05/16

in the next 5 seconds

Written by silverwolf on 2006/05/16

2 words...Sony sucks! Except for there TV's and DVD's and steroes and...well you get the picture.
Written by RastaDator (104) on 2006/05/16

I dont understand. Where is the proof about Sony fooling with a "old-DVD"? That photo doesnt seem to

prove anything.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/05/16

The guy works for pc magazine he really doesn't have any reason to lie and if he was lying he'd be in major legal trouble from sony if he were to purposely put a dvd disc into that drive himself... and then accuse sony of it.

Smarty Pants people said the same about betamax and it lost horribly to vhs. How do you figure everyone will be using Blu ray?? You DO realize hd-dvd has completely sold out in the usa, japan, and anywhere else it has released right? Stores have trouble keeping their hd-dvd movies in stock you think the demand for hd-dvd will suddenly disappear because of blu ray?

Also in regards to the 360s hd-dvd add on... why WOULDN'T it sell exactly?? Its guaranteed to be about $300 maybe less cheaper than a standalone blu ray drive regardless of how you look at it. I'm buying the hd-dvd add on and so are many other 360 owners. Blu ray isn't going to beat HD-DVD (brand recognition is on hd-dvd's side) did you even know that its possible to have on one side of a disc a dvd movie and on the reverse an hd-dvd movie? Companies could easily provide a SINGLE disc that works both for people with dvd players and for people with hd-dvd players. Blu Ray doesn't have such capability.
Written by cyrix_0 on 2006/05/16

HAHA....Sony caught with there pants down...

Written by optaviusx on 2006/05/16

I meant cheaper than a standalone hd-dvd drive :P
Written by Smarty Pants (291) on 2006/05/16

In terms of brand recognition. HD-DVD sounds alot like DVD1.5, kinda like xbox360 = xbox1.5. Its an extension of an existing names; not too next gen at all; more of an evolution of an exisiting technology. On top of that, people are 'HDed' to death; 'HD' is being attached to everything; 'HD' is the new 'Turbo' or 'Super' today.

And, Beta did not lose horribly. Beta has been (and still largely is) the standard format in professional video production for years. But, yea, it lost out in the consumer market. But, they didnt have PlayStation equipped Beta players back then.

Even if that HD-DVD add-on clocks in at 200 usd; thats half the price of the premium setup (66% of core) ... so that you can (only) watch HD-DVDs? You can't even get a digital signal out of it since the 360 doesnt have a digital board (only pseudo digital with AVmulti->HDMI converter).

The fact that the Wii is gonna cost less and has a smaller form factor is absurd. And, much like the first HD-DVD player, the only people it will sell to are reviewers.
Written by ej (100) on 2006/05/16

why do you sony fanboys just love sucking there dick they can lie to you all day and you don't care lol suckas
Written by ragnarok2040 (6) on 2006/05/16

From what I understand, Sony was doing side-by-side comparisons of DVD and Blu-ray movie qualities. The disc could have been the DVD version, but more likely is that it was an HD encoded version of the movie burned onto DVD+R for some reason, maybe the Blu-ray master hadn't been finalized, yet.
Written by RichieRaw (1) on 2006/05/16

maybe it was a portion of the movie with menus in HD, burned on a dvd, if they were to use the real DVD, why wouldn't they use, well, the real DVD, they own Sony Pictures...oh, BTW, Betamax and Betacam are pretty different, I work with the beta formats everyday, Betacam SP, SX, DigiBeta, etc.
Written by Blah (119) on 2006/05/16

rofl you all believe anything that comes out. If there was news that Microsoft has 250% of the gaming marketshare which isnt even possible, all of you would still believe it until someone proves it otherwise lol.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/05/16

And you believe sony is invincible in every sense of the word and can do no wrong funny how that works eh :)

Smarty Pants again with the nonsense xbox 1.5 talk... Betamax was a failure lets just face it. This will be my last specific post in this topic as its getting ridiculous now I don't know how many more times I need to say this.. If the xbox360 is xbox 1.5 and yet it has more than 5 times the framebuffer bandwidth of the ps3 2 times the pixel shader unit and 6 times the vertex shader units. A 95-99% efficient gpu at 4XAA that can sustain a peak fillrate of 16 gigasamples per second.
Written by Blah (119) on 2006/05/16

As for the HD-DVD drive being $199, thats basically like buying a premium PS3 except you dont have anything attached to it. PS3 and X360 will be the same in everyway possible lol so its gonna be a tight race next-generation. But as for this story, I think its fake. Its either fake, or the guy mistakenly thought that was the HD part of the comparison when really it was the standard DVD part.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/05/16

The 16 gigasamples per second fillrate, the vertex shader processing capability, the framebuffer bandwidth and the efficiency of the gpu is not only unmatched by the ps3 its unmatched by anything on the pc does this make the ps3 worse than the "xbox 1.5"?? You think the cell is going to magically takeover for the gpu in a way that no cpu on the market even the best intel and amd have to offer can?

Both the 360's cpu and the ps3s cpu would be outperformed by many mainstream high end pc cpus... in a majority of tasks related to games because they are severely stripped down cpus. They lose especially in single threaded game code. The move to a multi-threaded engine is only an attempt to bring their performance up to what a high end cpu can do.

Last I check the 360's HD-DVD price has yet to be confirmed, but even if its $199 its still cheaper than the ps3. Also for people wondering how that could've possibly been done its very possible for standard dvds to hold and playback 720p or 1080i content using DVD studio pro with mpeg2hd presets, but you are limited to how much playtime you have probably 20 minutes or so. I doubt sony played through the entire movie in front of everyone so its very believable they burned 1080i content onto a standard dvd. It had to be done on a blank DVD+R because the official DVD disc for that movie doesn't really have 1080i content so they created it.

optaviusx hey boy you have social life? go hang outside and get some chick... i am sorry to see you fight for sony but they are loosing the battle anyway:P

OptaviousX what did you mean by another mistake, Microsoft make a hell of a lot like letting assasins creed and now heavenly sword go.

Written by Mash (118) on 2006/05/17

Assasins Creed isn't a PS3 exclusive, just different release dates on 360.

IT WAS SIDE BY SIDE COMPARESiON!!!!!!! DVD vs Blue-RAY on the same computer!!!!! someone has been misleading everybody just to give SONY bad press, AGAIN!

Written by x3mis on 2006/05/17

To Smarty Pants : That Must Be The Worst Comparison Ever ! Do You Really Know What You Are Talking About ¿ I Don't Think So... 360 = Xbox 1.5... Just To Funny (Funny = Stupid) And HDDVD = DVD 1.5 Not Funny Just Stupid...

Do some investigation. Its been proven that this was faked. In any case, its inconsequential and outside of a few blogs no one cares.

OPTAVIUS

Did MS lose another potential killer app?

is that what you are suggesting when saying they've made another big mistake?
Written by XTR (3) on 2006/05/17

It's fake. Just calm down. The same fake as Assasin's Creed demo on Xbox 360.
Written by EdV (6) on 2006/05/17

Eurogamer was given the chance to try out the game at E3 last week, and given an Xbox 360 controller with which to play it, adding fuel to the rumours. This could simply mean that the game was being demoed on a PC - but the rumours are still flying after a report on Noooz.com claimed that a Ubi employee has also stated the game is in development for Xbox 360.
