More Final Fantasy news today, this time of a more substantial nature. Famitsu has posted a slew of new Final Fantasy XIII screens on their website. As you can see, these images look as good as some of the FMV CG from the early Final Fantasy PSX games. We are in for a real treat. (Thanks, Cyrix) *Link Fixed*

You've gotta be kidding me. Have you even played FF7? The FMVs in FF7 look like crap compared to these. I'd say they look almost as good as FFX's fmv.

looks great. too bad i never liked FF.

Actually... everything shown on that page is from the final fantasy versus 13 cg trailer shown at E3 2006..
Those are directly from the cg trailer those aren't gameplay screens, its possible the character can look that good as inphyy from ninety nine nights actually looks better than her cg counterpart, but there is much more to take into consideration in a rpg such as its environments or battle system.

the truth is that while the majority of the trailer was CGI, there was actual gameplay footage shown (or scripted real time to act like gameplay). the game does indeed look great. i just hope its not a CGI fest where you watch for 20 minutes and play for 10.

Kenny K, please let me know the source of your info. As far as I know, and that SquareEnix have revealed, MOST of the FF13 trailer was in real-time, the only parts that were prerendered are the train scene and the close-up of her face near the end.

Graphics are shokingly brilliant, and a true testmenet to the power that an be unloked from the cell, to know developers are getting these intense graphis so early in the development cycle is shocking.

If the link is correct then those are frames from the e3 CG trailer from Final Fantasy VS XIII. Not actual gamepley like thos from Final Fantasy XIII.
Ah! The images are not in that link but in this site itself. They are famitsu scans. And yeah they are impressive very impressive. One thing I noticed with this game is that it will be a lot more difficult to distinguish actual gameplay from CG cutscenes.

most of them are CG screenshots, but there are a few screenshots in there and they're not particularly impressive. thankfully, we probably won't see the game for a long while. just look for the jagged edges :)

Actually, most of those are using the in-game "White Engine." And I don't see any images of Versus in that article.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/06/16
This game definetly wont release till 2008 anyway so there is alot of room for improvement.
The first 6 are definetly cg the rest its hard to tell, but I'm pretty sure (aside from the first 6) 80% of what is shown in the rest of the screens are actually ingame graphics. I'm very impressed with these graphics. The thing not many understand is a game's graphics doesn't need to be overdone for it to be beautiful. Just present an acceptable level of graphics and match it with alot of high production values and great art design and you got yourself a winner. Games like gears of war or mass effect can have as much graphics as possible and still be outdone, by a game with lesser graphical quality and a better attention to detail. Thats what Square excels at this and the other final fantasy game is the only reason I want a ps3 so far. MGS4 is cool, but I need to see later versions of it when its further into development.
Note not saying both mass effect and gears aren't paying attention to details, but using them as an example because of their graphics. (Bioware always pays attention to details) Epic I've known them for their unreal games which have never really concentrated on the details much so I'll see what they do with gears.
I'm practically breaking my rule with Gears of War I normally wait to see what the game is delivering or know more about what it will before I purchase, but I'll buy gears of war like a blind fool without caring about any reviews even if it gets a 2.0 rating on all sites.

The 5th image is White Engine. Impressive, huh?
(FFXIII logo being the first image)
Written by optaviusx on 2006/06/16
I SERIOUSLY don't believe that 5th image is the white engine. If it is then I'm VERY impressed. That character quality actually isn't unachievable, but there is just something about it that makes me not believe its ingame. It doesn't really matter to be honest I'm looking at all the images and its already obvious to me that this engine is very impressive. Square Enix is smart they aren't going for purely graphics they are relying on their art heavily and seem to be focusing on the little details to make the world more believable. Its all about production value. Very similar to what sakaguchi is doing with his 360 games. Blue Dragon for example his attention to detail is second to none.
Developers should never be thinking about mainly graphics they need to find innovative ways to make use of all the extra processing power for maximum effect. To be completely honest this generation would be FAR more about the processors and the ability to unlock their potential than it would be about the video cards, but what Microsoft and Ati have done with the gpu on the 360 sorta prevents the cpus from taking center stage, but the cpus are extremely important this generation. I'm eager to see how they use the power. I probably wont own a ps3 till a little bit before Final Fantasy 13 is released nothing too crazy till then anyway.

Translated text below the girl in image 5 is only saying she isn't the protagonist, but they want it to be a strong female etc.
Written by Da Man (152) on 2006/06/16
Actually, the girl "MIGHT" not be the protagonist. She could, but someone else could be the protagonist too.And those battles are real people, they're trying to make the battles look like they've been taken straight from FFVII: Advent Children. And what we've seen, it seems like they might succeed in it.Btw, optavius, are you sure you're looking the right screenshot? The 4th picture (the close up from her face) isn't real time, but the fifth one is definitely taken from the real-time battle we can already see in the trailer.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/06/16
Ahh it appears you're right Da Man this game looks awesome. You are also dead on with that one they are most definetly trying to make the battles look like Advent Children style stuff. Already a winner in my book.
Come to think of it this game in my opinion is a graphically perfect game in every aspect (that statement might be a bit premature since they haven't released anything aside from what we've seen in the trailer), but when you watch the trailer of this game taken from gametrailers.com and you see this thing in motion its definetly one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen and if the game maintains that type of graphical quality during actual gameplay this game is enough of a reason for me to shell out the money for the console, I hope to see more of this game and Blue Dragon at TGS.
Still shots don't do this game any justice whatsoever. Sure in the trailer you can tell which parts are 100% cg, but with in motion gameplay that looks as good as what I saw in that trailer only an idiot would complain. If I get any sort of confirmation before the launch of the ps3 that what was shown wasn't just target footage made to look like gameplay and thats what I can actually expect from actual gameplay I'll shell out about $750 for a ps3 and as many games as I can get first day of launch to hold me over until ff13.
I'm actually going against my better judgement here since realistically Square doesn't have final hardware and would need much more time with the ps3 before being able to have something playable that already looks as good as what is shown in the trailer. My gut tells me its target footage just intended to give a hint as to the direction they plan to go with the gameplay, but we'll see I'm hoping thats what it really looks like.

Then again that system looks a bit too well thought to be just throw away type material. If I'm not mistaken it appears as if what was going on was a shenmue type moment where you act out a specific scene by hitting the right button at the right time. The entire game's gameplay wont be like that, but there will be instances where they probably want to throw in some insane looking action. Come to think of it they might do those types of situations rather often.
Ahhhh I see what square is doing.. pay attention to the radar in the upper left corner it perfectly corresponds to the enemy you attack and notice when she attacks everyone they all start blinking. What you are seeing in the bottom part of the screen where it says attack, strike etc are instructions to pull off with a series of button presses (think guitar hero, or shenmue) Some of your buttons will be set to those commands and after each series of attacks a new set of commands come up. I suppose these situations will take place when you are surrounded or in specific situations in which they setup ahead of time. If you mess up then I guess you return to the default way of fighting.
When the orange light highlights the commands at the bottom of the screen that means its time to press it.
Written by Bill Nye on 2006/06/17
I think you're close with the gameplay analysis optaviusx. With the radar I think you're completely right but with the commands I don't think it's quite like that. It looks like you queue up attacks or commands when the enemy is attacking you. This can be seen about 1/3 of the way through the battle scene of the trailer when she blocks a soldiers attack. You'll notice that the player has queued up two Attack commands and is cycling through V Strike and Aerial for the third command. A little description of each command comes up as you the player cycles and shows that V Strike knocks the enemy into the air and Aerial is an attack from the air.
You can also see that each attack is worth a certain amount of ATB Points as indicated by the number next to each command on the list. You only get a certain amount of points to use in a given attack sequence as indicated by the "ATB Cost". So when you've used up all your ATB points it's the enemy's turn to attack. This battle system looks promising, but I would imagine that doing every single animation for all the various types of battles will be an overwhelming task for programmers and animators. But I'm sure a big developer has the man power to do it.

the forest area thus not look good.It looks like a ps2 background and very bland and not vibrant unlike the forest in the naughty dog game. Not very next gen.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/06/17
Realistically this game CANNOT be even 40% complete. Also kupal are you absolutely insane? That forest area looks amazing. It looks ALOT more vibrant and busy than the forest in the naughty dog game.It doesn't beat the naughty dog forest on pure graphics, but guess what? Thanks to an amazing artistic design and far more attention to detail it thoroughly puts that forest in the naughty dog title to shame.
To me Square Enix knows exactly what the true purpose of these new consoles is all about. They are using the extra power not to pour on amazing visuals, but to come closer to believability. Its what Sakaguchi is doing with all the extra power he has available to him with the 360. The shadows for trees are far more realistically done as sunlight can get through each individual leaf on the tree just like it is in real life. The water is the best water has ever looked in a game it reflects everything in the world including the characters or trees. The speed or flow of the water can change randomly thanks to the engine.
Purely algorithm based animation system so the character's animation and transition between animations look as smooth as possible. Before he turns his waist in a direction he's going to run in the first things that turn are his head and eyes in the direction he plans to run. The motion blur only takes place in the direction the character is running so his movements look far more realistic. Realtime physical calculations so no spells will ever look the same twice and of course the large number of interactive elements being poured into the game. Square Enix if they still had Sakaguchi.. man :) Not that they aren't still a great company, but he brings so many innovative ideas to everything he does.

Actually, this game could be surprisingly long in development. It was a PS2 game at first after all, and that development started after FFX-2 about three years ago. Of course they threw most into the garbage bin after being impressed by the what they could do with the FFVII Tech Demo, but they didn't start completely from zero with this one. They have the general idea and things worked out already. They "just" had to turn it into a PS3 game, which is easier said than done, of course.

I can't say anything about the graphics until I play the game myself.

i think it will release early 2008...we all know its a "port" but they are really serious with their FF franchise so maybe it will be worth the wait
Written by optaviusx on 2006/06/17
No way will this baby be a port. The only last gen aspect about this is some of the games content. They will most definetly be redesigning every aspect of it so it can be at a better than average level for a ps3 title. If they had a train in the game that train is getting completely remade. If they had a forest the forest is being redesigned from the ground up as I'm sure the same is happening to swords, cloths, grass, ground, walls you name it. I don't want to get my hopes up then be disappointed I want to see exactly what I saw in that trailer during actual gameplay.

Ive never meant anything bad when i said it was a port...what ive tried to say was that it shouldnt be too far in the future before we see this games on the shelves.PD_ even if its a damn port, its an amazing game...ive enjoyed every FF so this one will give me the same experience, maybe a better one.
