Leaked Sony PS3 Q&A >
2006/07/10 15:25:10: Posted by DM
Apparently an internal SCEE PS3 Q&A from E3 has made its way onto the web. It's an interesting read, it contains facts that many have been speculating about. It is a long read as well, covering some of the following topics:

Console Assembly will start simultaneously in Japan & China in the summer
Hints at DLNA compliancy (see questions on HDMI)
Stresses "PS3 is a computer" - notes that standard USB adaptors can be used with PS3.
Specifically notes that you'll be able to use standard card readers, wifi adaptors and usb port multipliers (although doesn't address how this will be achieved wrt drivers), and transfer data from PCs and other AV/CE devices.
The noise output of PS3 is approx 29 db! (Or roughly the same as a slim PS2).
PS3 is 'BD Live' compliant. (Internet-connected Blu-ray features, like downloadable content and Picture-in-Picture info browsing during movies etc.)
Up to 8 controllers are supported (presumably 4 wireless + 4 wired).

Labeled With  sony playstation 3

ps3 is a computer, ps3 is a computer and in addition to that the ps3 is also a computer. Did I mention it was a computer?
Written by purbeast on 2006/07/10

LOL ... here is the summary in 1 question:

Q1: Why did you do this and that and this as well to the PS3?

A1: The PS3 is a computer.
Written by Doc (128) on 2006/07/10

It's a computer? Really?? So does that mean I can go on the internet and stuff with it?

I'm guessing the only games to make use of 8 controller support would be sports games. Or maybe high camera slashers like Hunter or Gauntlet.

8 people on screen tearing up zombies, be sure to turn off friendly-fire.:)

It sounded like a robot answered those questions.

The 8 controller thing is probably for bragging rights; there might only be a handful of games that use all 8 in the entire lifetime of the PS3. Probably party type or sports games.

8 controllers is hillarious, That is just retarded. (Post 100 woooo)

Q11. How is the PS3 network service going to be ? Will you also start the service from day one ? What are the differences between Xbox Live and PS3 network services ?

A11. Apart from providing basic features and functions, the most important element is content and services. Downloading music in SingStar, purchasing or exchanging game data as we demonstrated at E3 press conference and many other new ways of enjoyment will be provided.

Q12. Will the network service be charged ?

A12. Basic services available free for current PCs will be free of charge but content and specific services will be charged from the beginning.

Errrrr what?!

I dont belive you can make the statement that i havent played any of those games, Seeing as you would have no way of knowing so. But besides that, My point still stands... Plenty of jap titles. Im done with you... Moving on.

As I've said from the beginning they try to fool you with this bull online play will be free nonsense, but plan to charge for the things such as demos whereas 360 owners get them for free. Sky we are getting enchant arm, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Cry On, Bullet With, Project Sylpheed, Ninety Nine Nights, Okamoto's secret game, Tri-Ace RPG, Trusty Bell, Namco's second 360 rpg, etc.

All of sakaguchi's games are coming to the states, enchant arm is coming, tri-ace's rpg is coming, project sylpheed is coming, okamoto's game is coming, ninja gaiden 2, doa code cronus, resident evil 5, and so many more. The other games coming from the usa and europe are just as strong. The 360 has ALOT of momentum right now and the funny part is? Thats only the beginning. It started march 2006 and later on this year and in 2007 the 360 will be far more popular than it ever was earlier this year and now. Too many strong games coming for the 360 not to dominate.

Or should I rephrase.. too many strong games for the 360 to be ignored :) If you thought 360s were selling now just wait later on this year and from march 2007 on.

Sky let me fix that for ya 360 >>>>>> PS3. Now matter how you toss the dice GTA is the biggest seller Sony had GTA 3 sold over 11 million, Vice City sold over 13 million, San andreas over 13 million. The ps3 still has it, but the loss of exclusiveness means the majority of people will buy it for as cheap as they can get it and thats the 360. I guess it also helps that the 360 version will look superior in the graphics department ;)

i thought about responding to opta... but its pointless.. my post clearly said MS hasent gotten any jap support hardley since launch (2 games).. wow.. and i will admit 360 does have momentum going just because of the fact they released a year ahead.. expect a decline in world wide 360 sales march 07 thru infinity

I'm still waiting for my 360 killer app. I have been vastly underwhelmed right now. I am willing to bet a majority of people are still playing Halo 2 on their 360's. That is not a good thing. For optax to say that the 360 will be > than the PS3 is blatant fanboyism. I'm still waiting to see if the 360 will be > than the original Xbox. Up to this point, it isn't happening. I like my PS2 more than the Xbox, so I guess at this time I'd say the PS2>Xbox>360. Isn't that ridiculous? Now you know what you sound like. Fact is, the 360 doesn't have a lot of good games out, it will take time. Just as it will take time for the PS3 to establish itself. Just b/c you are an insane fanboy doesn't mean your rhetoric is agreeable to everyone else. Time will tell, not your silly opinion.
Written by nock on 2006/07/11

I love my 360. And while I do still play Halo on it, Oblivion has been getting much more time on it recently. I'll agree, optavius x does display blatant fanboy traits, but to deny that there are blatant sony fanboys on this board is just ignorant. Comments like "PS3>>>>>>>>360" are just as ignorant as "360>>>>>>>PS3." Has anyone here actually played the PS3??? Didn't think so. As for my own opinion, I'm happy with my 360, and I'm excited about the games it has lined up in the near and distant future. Will it ever catch on in Japan...no, but its not because its inferior, its because the Japanese are to proud. That doesn't mean that its not getting support from Japanese developers. The system has sold too fast for Japanese developers to ignore it.

Looking at the line up for the PS3, I'm not foaming at the mouth to get one. Nothing against the system, there just isn't anything that appeals to me personally. FFXIII looks good, but it won't be a launch title and no game (not even the best FF) is worth buying a $600 system. Heavenly Sword looks great...but I'll just play God of War on my PS2 if I get in the mood for that type of game.

When Nintendo (finally) releases the Wii...I don't think I'll give the PS3 a second thought. I'll be too busy with my Wii (he he) to think about it. Hell, there's a good chance that my 360 will take a back seat to the Wii, who knows.

Thats my two cents on the matter. This ignorant argument over which system is better needs to be stopped. Nobody has facts to back up any claims (not even you, optavius). Technical specs don't mean anything...all that matters is whats fun to play. And as stated earlier, nobody here has played a PS3. Even if you made it to E3 this year, I'd still argue that you didn't spend enough time with the PS3 to get an accurate comparison of fun factor.

Being proud has nothing to do with xbox not selling in Japan; take a look at iPod sales over there (designed in USA and made in China). They're more than willing to buy American products that appeal to them. The 360 just doesnt appeal to them; thats about it.
Written by Alexend (3) on 2006/07/11

To some of you...

Didn't you noticed that you're comparing and judging a product that isn't out yet? Whatever you're saying about who's better and this and that, the point is that the PS3 is not out yet so all you're saying is just speculative bullshit. You can't even take X360 present for granted because he's all alone on the market, do you really think that X360 will just go "through" Sony PS3?!? That is just amateurish talking. Whatever will happen when PS3 comes out, it will happen then and whatever your saying now will not change the fact that you can't control the future.

It's like you don't care about the games or the console, but about the competition between the two and wich will be the best... that's so pointless.

and also...

My guess is that most people that are taking trash about PS3, even before it's out, are X360 owners that wish to say "I've made the right choice to buy a X360". Assume yourself, you bought a X360 and maybe you'll want a PS3 also, or not, but wishing that one "eats" the other is simply absurd, it will not happen that way. They will share the market for a couple of years for sure and maybe then, we'll see one take the new "crown" of the most popular console or even, the retirement of one of them.

um, i actually played the PS3. at E3 this year. and the four titles i played were a lot of fun, which is, at least i though, the reason why we play video games to begin with. it has nothing to do with visuals, or consoles, but how much fun you are having playing video games.

of the PS3 games, i played Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom (which was very rough, and showed promise), Warhawk (which played very, very fluidly and responsively with the tilt sensor controls), Resistance: Fall of Man (played great, though i wish the character would run faster), and Heavenly Sword(which is just as fun as videos make it look, and smacked of God of War, which isn't a bad thing.

so i think that i can say from experience, that the PS3 was highly enjoyable so far, and the future promises to be even brighter. i played upcoming 360 games also, and they were no less promising either. i didn't get to play the Wii (the lines were very long, and i didn't have the time to wait; there's too much to see at E3 to spend all your time waiting to play *one* game), so i have opinion on that system at the moment.

which system is better is the stupidest practice of fanboys ever concieved, and i've had to listen to the SAME EXACT ARGUMENTS for 20 years now. you fanboys aren't saying anything new, or anything that hasn't been said a million times before in console wars past.

since some folks like to argue "facts," here's a few facts and conclusions based solely off of those facts, with no fanboy bias.

Fact #1: The SNES sold roughly 60 million units.

Fact #2: The Playstation 1 sold roughly 100 million units.

Conclusion: The Sony Playstation grew the gaming market by 40 million people. Up until 1995, 40 million people had probably never touched a video game before. those 40 million people don't get nostalgic over Mario, or Zelda, or Metroid, or even Pro Wrestling and Gauntlet. they never played those games. because their experiences with gaming started with Sony, they've developed a bond with the brand.

Fact #3: The Nintendo Gamecube sold roughly 25 million units.

Fact #4: The Microsoft X Box sold roughly 25 million units.

Conclusion: Nintendo actually lost 35 million gamers during the Gamecube Era, when compared to the success of it's previous consoles. where did those 35 million go? Here's my theory: former Nintendo fans pissed off that Sony unceremoniously handed Nintendo their asses during the PS1 era, refused to bow down to Sony and purchase the PS2. since they were also a little miffed at Nintendo during the N64 era, they jumped ship from Nintendo as well. who to run to? you guessed it, Microsoft and their new X Box console. it boasted better graphics than their hated Playstation 2, and generally had the same types of games also. it was a win/win: they get to snub Sony, and they get to show how miffed they are at Nintendo.

Fact #5: The Playstation 2 has sold roughly 100 million units and *counting*.

Fact #6: The X Box 360 has sold roughly 3.8 million units to date.

Fact #7: It has been reported on various sites that the PS2 has outsold the 360 for the months of May and June, with roughly 250,000 units sold in those months (the 360 had about 206,000 units sold).

Conclusion: Even now, in the face of it's 6th year on the market and new technology on the horizon, the Playstation 2 is still in demand. the $130US price, and library of thousands of games make it an enticing deal for those that have yet to upgrade from a PS1, or get a game system at all (remember, the 5 and 6 year olds of 2000 are 10 and 11 now. they want to play the big folks games too). even more enticing to parents than a $400 Next Gen X Box 360. for that price, a parent can get a $130 PS2 and 13 Greatest Hits titles (priced at $19.99 US).

even the Wii, which will probably be priced in the $200 to $250 price range isn't as appealing as that PS2 deal. sure, it's new, and it has better graphics (a few grades higher than an X Box), but $130 and 13 games is hard to ignore)

Fact #8: The PS3 shipping on November 11 and 17 will sell out. Period.

Conclusion: If Sony manages to ship their planned 2 million PS3s at launch, and another 2 million by the end of 2006, those units will sell out. guaranteed. look at facts 2 and 5 for evidence to support that assumption. out of 100 million Sony fans (40 million of them popping their gaming cherry on a Sony console), there will be more than enough to guarantee a sell out well into early 2007 (when Sony plans on shipping another 2 million by the end of their 2006 fiscal year, ending March 2007). that's 6 million PS3s. and their "pure" fanbase is roughly 40 million people. that's still 34 million people aching for a PS3.

conveniently enough, by the time that 34 million people will be able to get their hands on a PS3 (i'm guessing Sony will ship an additional 6 million by the end of 2007, bringing the total number sold to 12 million units for 2007) in around 2008, the price of the unit will have dropped by $50 to $100 (assuming that the system doesn't undergo any price drops in 2007). so by 2008, the PS3 will be down to $400 core, $500 premium. sure, that may still seem pricey, but don't forget that there will be 12 million PS3 owners buying PS3 games and Blu Ray movies, thus increasing the support the two software products will be recieving.

developers will be more comfortable making games for it, as it will have proven that the price wasn't an issue all along. the 360, which has seen a decline in sales to a degree, will probably only breach the 7 million units sold number by years end, and if they don't have any really strong titles for next spring or summer, sales will level out, if not drop off (kind of like how they've been this summer). don't get me wrong, the 360 has some great titles coming out this year: Lost Planet, Too Human, Mass Effect (i don't count the PC ports, just exclusives), but what about *next* year? what's coming out during 2007 that screams killer app?

Halo 3? sure, that's a good one. for X Box owners that love Halo. but the market is full of more than just FPS lovers. where's a plethora of games for the RPG lovers (the ones that love traditional ones, not Sci-Fi). where's the strategy games. puzzle games for next year. so far, Microsoft has strongly come out of the gate for this fall, but next year concerns me. anyway, i'm off work and gotta go, so i'll continue my rant when i get home, but you should all sort of see my point by now.
