Of the six largest Hollywood studios, only Universal Studios was left supporting HD DVD exclusively. Today the head of Universal made some comments on how the "reviews" are in, and HD DVD is hands down the leader in picture quality, audio experience and interactive capability.

I've heard the same thing from several tech savvy friends over at the local Best Buy. I don't really care either way. I just spent about $100 on a LOTR DVD set. I'm not about to switch to HD anytime soon, even though I have only HDTV in my house!

Well its true HD-DVD is the current leader for sure and with such an extreme price I don't ever see how the average consumer will ever buy into blu ray it needs a massive price drop.

I agree with everyone who has posted so far. The Blu-ray format does not offer the high level of quality that HD-DVD does in terms of mandatory requirements for audio and video specifications. Plus, the pricing of Blu-ray hardware is so much more expensive than HD-DVD. From a business point of view, Blu-ray is going to have a very difficult time surviving...and the interesting thing is that I have been seeing similar headlines in many major national magazines and newspapers.

This is stupid...Sony and Universal are for movies what Sony and Microsoft are for games so it doesnt surprises me at all. Its true that 1st gen HDDVD look better than 1st gen Blu-ray, but eventually, Blu ray will be better with MPEG4, VC-1, and other compression formats...a format war is not decided with 1st gen titles...its with support.

When the PS3 comes out, then decide whether Blu-Ray will survive. You might not know this, but the Playstation brand is the most popular game console brand in the world and it has a big chance of getting blu-ray players disguised as game consoles to many people lol. Now if the PS3 is a success yet Blu-Ray movie sales arent, then you can kiss Blu-Ray goodbye in the movie industry ;].

^^^^ i agree also wait until the ps3 drops...blu ray movies sales are going to go up... there Format is gonna change(codec).. also more players will be on the marketBlu ray long run + ps3 = sucess

Isn't that how DVDS get the jump? It was doing ok at first, but it did extremely well once ps2 came out cause of the DVD function, Training Day DVD, first of its time, stats shows evidence that because of ps2 the DVD sold out more than VHS. Blu ray will likely happen consider that its coming with the console itself, considering the pricing :>One thing for sure you can't judge the way things are first gen, don't say that dvd's aren't in the same aspect, why the fuck do they have shit like extreme/special editions where video and audio got a full remake. Plus Codec changes..

DVDs kinda sucked when they first came out. I still have a copy of the first run of Reseviour Dogs; its double sided, one is fullscreen, the other is letter boxed full screen (ie, not anamorphic)...it looks like crap on a wides screen display.

AGAIN, and AGAIN...all these pre-mature claims about which format is the winner. For all of you who are declaring a winner and side with HD-DVD, tell me why Blu-Ray still has the majority of tech companies backing it, along with studios, while more studios are signing on to Blu-Ray??
Written by optaviusx on 2006/09/18
Nah dvd was already a success even before the ps2 came, but many people saw the ps2 + dvd as a nice combo and many bought it.Doc... thats exactly how it was for betamax and umd. 1000 companies could be backing blu ray it wont lead to its success. The companies don't affect much its what the consumer buys that decides who wins and then all the companies will follow suit as a result of consumer demand. I repeat how much company support blu ray has means zero. The average consumer wont have any idea whatsoever how many studios are backing what with the number of HD-DVD titles available and on the way.

i wouldent dare comepare this situation to betamax fo one simple reason BETAMAX DIDENT HAVE A TROJAN HORSE.. sony hasent "offically" started marketing blu ray... wait until the ps3 comes out.. out that hype and media converage... every body and there momma is gonna know what blu ray is and that sonys new console has it... in oct theres a shit load of 1080p sets comming.. by the end of there year every one will know what blu ray is about... AND there will be more consumers behind blu ray (ps3)

Optavius, you have a valid point especially considering they were technologies pioneered by Sony. But I don't think this is the case. It is still too soon to tell.
Even though I am partial to Blu-Ray at this point, I will gladly adopt HD-DVD if it ever reigns superior in the next format war. Unfortunately, Samsung launched a half-ass product to market to try and get a leg up on Toshiba, but it didnt properly represent Blu-Ray. Before the end of the year, the BD products emerging may or may not justify their price-tag. Even though there is a big price difference between the two formats' hardware, I wouldnt consider it just yet. When DVD was just making its way into more consumers homes, I remember forking out $850 for my first Sony DVD player, and I still think it was worth it. There was no way I would have ever considered the LaserDisc player which was hundreds less at the time just because it was cheaper. And at that time, LaserDisc was hitting strong, but DVD (although expensive) was emerging.Long story short, its too early for anyone to declare a winner.

Yeah even though HD-DVD seems like its more successful, both it and Blu-Ray are still unknown to people. They are barely making good sales compared to the last-gen DVD format. So really there isn't a clear winner until these new formats get out in the open and people become interested in buying these players.

In the logic that Toshiba is progressing with HD DVD, SD format before becoming DVD is an opposite. And, the company that supports it is time of SD format MMCD format and an opposite. HD DVD will be defeated. As much as DVD that defeats MMCD format at SD format and is united. If MS did not put a horizontal spear, it is necessary to have united next generations DVD originally. ttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD
