Lik Sang Closes Its Doors Due To Sony Lawsuits >
2006/10/24 9:08:18: Posted by vividbreeze
Lik Sang, one of the worlds top game import/export houses, has announced that it is closing its doors due to Sony's winning of a lawsuit which prevents the sale of import goods outside of Japan. This is pure Sony vindicitiveness, and it is a shame that Sony chose to go ahead and force a great company like LikSang to close. Sony PR is really working wonders these days.

PRESS RELEASE

Hong Kong, October 24th of 2006 - Lik-Sang.com, the popular gaming retailer from Hong Kong, has today announced that it is forced to close down due to multiple legal actions brought against it by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Sony claimed that Lik-Sang infringed its trade marks, copyright and registered design rights by selling Sony PSP consoles from Asia to European customers, and have recently obtained a judgment in the High Court of London (England) rendering Lik-Sang's sales of PSP consoles unlawful.

As of today, Lik-Sang.com will not be in the position to accept any new orders and will cancel and refund all existing orders that have already been placed. Furthermore, Lik-Sang is working closely with banks and PayPal to refund any store credits held by the company, and the customer support department is taking care of any open transactions such as pending RMAs or repairs and shipping related matters. The staff of Lik-Sang will make sure that nobody will get hurt in the crossfire of this ordeal.

A Sony spokesperson declined to comment directly on the lawsuit against Lik-Sang, but recently went on to tell Gamesindustry.biz that "ultimately, we're trying to protect consumers from being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards, due to voltage supply differences et cetera; is not - in PS3's case - backwards compatible with either PS1 or PS2 software; will not play European Blu-Ray movies or DVDs; and will not be covered by warranty".

Lik Sang strongly disagrees with Sony's opinion that their customers need this kind of protection and pointed out that PSP consoles shipped from Lik-Sang contained genuine Sony 100V-240V AC Adapters that carry CE and other safety marks and are compatible world wide. All PSP consoles were in conformity with all EU and UK consumer safety regulations.

Furthermore, Sony have failed to disclose to the London High Court that not only the world wide gaming community in more than 100 countries relied on Lik-Sang for their gaming needs, but also Sony Europe's very own top directors repeatedly got their Sony PSP hard or software imports in nicely packed Lik-Sang parcels with free Lik-Sang Mugs or Lik-Sang Badge Holders, starting just two days after Japan's official release, as early as 14th of December 2004 (more than nine months earlier than the legal action). The list of PSP related Sony Europe orders reads like the who's who of the videogames industry, and includes Ray Maguire (Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd), Alan Duncan (UK Marketing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd), Chris Sorrell (Creative Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd), Rob Parkin (Development Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited), just to name a few.

"Today is Sony Europe victory about PSP, tomorrow is Sony Europe’s ongoing pressure about PlayStation 3. With this precedent set, next week could already be the stage for complaints from Sony America about the same thing, or from other console manufacturers about other consoles to other regions, or even from any publisher about any specific software title to any country they don’t see fit. It’s the beginning of the end... of the World as we know it", stated Pascal Clarysse, formerly known as the Marketing Manager of Lik-Sang.com.

"Blame it on Sony. That's the latest dark spot in their shameful track record as gaming industry leader. The Empire finally 'won', few dominating retailers from the UK probably will rejoice the news, but everybody else in the gaming world lost something today."

I thought when you buy something, it's yours. you can resell it as you please, where you please. that's kind of the concept of ownership, right?

why can't lik-sang sue sony for harassment or contempt or something?
Written by Matt (160) on 2006/10/24

Wow, Sony are cunts. I don't think I'll ever buy another product of theirs again (not that they really make that much worth buying). They make me sick. I'd love to see this happen to Sony, lying, cheating, disgusting bastards.

Yay, Sony wins a legal battle... but, even when they win, they lose.

Just when I think I can't dislike Sony more they pull crap like this. Lik-Sang you will be missed. I guess Sony will go after play-asia next. This hurts all gamers.

It really is a shame to see such an effective middle man go down. It's more of a shame that Lik-sang always looked out for their customers more than Sony has. Though as is evident in most of these posts, pretty much everything Sony does is screwing them over in one way or another; guess it's karmic, huh?

Also, on a tangent: Has anyone ever noticed that the PS3 fanboys tend to have smaller vocabulary and less grammatical accuracy than the 360 or Wii fanboys? I've noticed that, at least.

Have any of you guys actually USED Lik-Sang? Or, are you just jumping in on the bash-Sony bandwagon?

And, divulging customer information (although funny) is not good business practice; but they have nothing to lose i guess.
Written by Rav (14) on 2006/10/24

I use Lik Sang and often, i have recommended them to friends and they and I have been very pleased with them.

Excellent company and a prime example of good business. A small business which developed into a semi large business based on excellent customer service and great pricing.

I've used them for 6 years, and for me and my circle of friends will miss them.

I have just cancelled my PS3 purchase plans, and vow to never buy another sony product (despite my absolute obsession with Metal Gear).

There is nothing wrong with importing, ethically or otherwise, it hurts nobody.

Sony only care about their sales through "push" anyway so what difference was it. To somehow show loyalty to the japanese market by ensuring the 100,000 ps3's stay at home? How about you struture a better launch plan and launch with more units.

Disgusted.
Written by steve_o_3000 on 2006/10/24

that's not cool at all.
Written by MR NEW YORK (156) on 2006/10/24

Also I know you Europeans probably don't like this, but I see it as a good thing. The launch numbers we are getting are already too small to begin with, so it would ruin the launch for both territories if everyone else tried to grab a piece of the tiny and already half-eaten pie also.

new york, just shut the hell up you stupid sony fanboy f@g. this thread is about sony screwing the little guys. i've never used lik-sang, but i feel bad for them. it's like a bully in highschool picking on a little kid. it's wrong!

true there's a 100 million people who bought the ps2, but that won't be the same number this time around. alot of ex-sony fanboys are already pissed off at them for the stupid sh!t they've been pulling lately. not only that, their products are crappy too. their hdtvs are losing ground to samsung, their vaio laptop sucks, the psps sucks(so much potential, but sucks @ss)

@MR NEW YORK

It's not a matter of fanboyism at all! Don't you see we couldn't care less about getting an imported PS3 or not?? We are mad because it's about one of the most important stores of the import gamer community that is closing its doors! I was a regular customer of that store for years and now SONY forces it to close doors. How could I not be mad ( not say furious ) at them??

You lack understanding of the situation.

I have purchased various things from Lik-sang quite frequently. I'm sad to see them go and especially as it's the fault of a bunch of utter cunts (Sony).
Written by Matt (160) on 2006/10/24

This reminds me of Sony fucking GBAX and stopping them selling PSPs - although they've continued by selling GP2X handhelds it was pretty unfair. I've spoken to the owner of the site on IRC a few times.
Written by Walkin (118) on 2006/10/24

I've used Lik-Sang and Play-Asia several times as well. While I wish I could stop buying Sony stuff I'll still get a PS3.
Written by Nemesis IX (371) on 2006/10/24

Just because Lik Sang do indeed provide safe power supplies to EU/UK standards, that does not mean that they are legally liable to do it on Sony's behalf. Say if a Lik Sang power supply, despite being deemed safe, went faulty and caused injury: why should Sony be liable for the fact that Lik Sang had sold a power supply extramaritally, despite the fact that they shouldn't have? Meanwhile, Sony gets heat from the EU/UK standards agencies.

Sorry, but Lik Sang, no matter how good a website it is, can not expect to sell such regulated items on Sony's behalf, without their express permission, and a contractual agreement/legal bind which is made known to the EU/UK standards agencies. They were within their right to not have Lik Sang take Sony's regional produce safety policies into their own hands and just bundle peripheral adapters with any old Sony product.

Also, I've got to say, I find the insinuation that the High Court of London is corrupt simply because they deemed Sony to be legally correct to be laughable. I'm not going to believe all the rabid anti-Sony crap that all the XBots are gleefully throwing around at the moment, spinning in their desk chairs and seal-clapping like giddy idiots.
Written by Odins_wrath (214) on 2006/10/24

you gotta be Fu**ing kidding me! i used Lik-Sang for everything ! argh!!! i didnt hate sony before.. i was holding out against the critics but its hard not to now. fuck em.. im done
Written by neoimpulse on 2006/10/24

i was going to buy a psp next month but after erading this i think not. i've imported many games through lik-sang and it sucks that sony runs them out of business through the use of expensive lawsuits.

Written by Nemesis IX (371) on 2006/10/25

using my name eh. funny what people do when they can't think of a revenge comment.
Written by TheValeman (2) on 2006/10/26

I dont know why they just stop selling Sony goods and re-open under a different name ... Suk-Ling.com ? ... and continue selling the other goods they always have.

Maybe they don't sell enough of everything else to make a decent living? That would indeed be a sad indictment on the industry as a whole that one Company has such a big impact.

I do think the owners closing Lik-Sang down tends to indicate that the bulk of their income was centred on Sony products. The sad thing is that Sony will do well with the PISS3 as it'll be the cheapest way to get their other DRM infested rootkit called Blu-Ray ... so lots of non-gamers will buy it for HD movies, giving Sony lots of great publicity for their sales numbers irrespective of the fact they may never play a game on the thing.
