A new Xbox 360 in 5 years. Cool.

By that time the cost of making one will really go down. So that means a cheaper console. But they could come up with a slimmer design like the new PS2. But if not they should find a way to put the power block inside.

Let me not forget that the HD-DVD(or BLu-ray if it wins) should be internal and not external.

Consoles getting more expensive, they should at least try to stretch its life a little further.
Written by kidkit on 2007/03/13

they did stretch it out! 2001 - 2005 for xbox, now 2005 - 2011, 6 or 7 years. And I expect Sony wants Ps3 to last until at least a similar time. And with inflation consoles today aren't that much more expensive if at all. Look at the Price of Neo Geo or 3DO back in the day.

In five years time when the next Xbox is released, it will DEFINITELY make sense to include either an HD-DVD or a Blu-ray drive. Microsoft will select the winner of that format war, because by then then winner will be known and the prices will have significantly dropped.

But seriously, the PS3 won't see a benefit for at least several years...and that will be FAR too late to help it, because SO MUCH damage will have been done.

EVERY Playstation 3 system has its price raised by about $240 thanks to Blu-ray, while less than 1% of games use more than 9GB of space, which means that DVDs are fine for over 99% of games currently in use. It was a bad move to build Blu-ray into the PS3 as a default feature...making it an upgradeable feature for movies would have been much smarter, even if it isn't as good of a "value," because the primary market should have been focused on GAMES, like it is with the Xbox 360.

I think our friend, kidkit, brings up an excellent point about pricing. Look at the Neo Geo, how expensive it was...but look at how long it lasted!!! I don't think any other system EVER lasted as long as the Neo Geo!

I can't wait to play some of those Neo Geo games on Xbox Live Arcade.

By the way, I found out that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the four-player arcade game from Konami that was so popular in the 90's, will be released on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday for only $5!!!!

That is RADICAL!!! That is BODACIOUS!!! COWABUNGA, DUDE!!!

It makes perfect sense , but remenber that rfom is reported to using around 17gb , gengi is using more than 10gb , Mgs4 is supose to use more than 25gb(kojima said that)..etc.

lets waint and see if its realy around 1% like you your assumptions.( ps3 only got a couple of titles.)

There are compreesion techniques availabe , they are being efecient on the xbox360 case , but we cant simply deny that the games data is being growing in fast rate.

What realy worth of the blu ray (except it huge space) is that way its making the game pirats difficult , the drives and media are too expensive...it will take 2 or 3 years to see most of the "pirats" pcs, equipment with one.

In this sense , blu ray is helping sony.

Right now there are games for the ps2 that fill a 9GB dvd (or 2 standard dvds). Similarly the games of ps3 in a few years will reach the 50GB limit of ps3's BD.

9GB are too few for comfort. The games of 360 (their single player pasts) have 6-15 from start to end. Games with 50 hours of gameplay (if we ever see them for 360) will fill 2 or 3 (or possibly more) discs. Now that I'm thinking of it Blue Dragon is such a game so there.

Response to Game_Demon:

Yes, Blue Dragon is the only Xbox 360 game that takes up more than one DVD...and that means less than 1%, because there are well over 100 games on the Xbox 360.

Also, your PS2 analysis confirms what I said. You mentioned that there are games on the PS2 that are more than one DVD. Well, there are over 8,000 PS2 games across the world, and the fact that there are only several PS2 games that take up more than one DVD means........less than 1%!

With the Playstation 3, there are games listed as having over 9GB, but let's be honest with each other. All of those claims were made for marketing purposes to make it seem like Sony made the right decision. The fact of the matter that all developers are perfectly aware of is that games like Genji, and rfom, could have EASILY been put on a standard DVD. MGS4 might be a little bit different because it has a lot of movie clips that take up a lot of space, but even that could use VC-1 (the best video compression possible) to make it so the game could take up a lot less space.

We will have to see what happens when Metal Gear is released for the Xbox 360.

"If we ever see 50+ hours of gameplay".... Are you kidding.

Ever hear of a game called Oblivion? 250+ hours with expansions.

Back on topic, I remember microsoft saying that they wanted the 360 to have a life span as long as the PS2. At least they won't drop it like a bad habit as soon as their new console is released (xbox). For those of us that can wait on new consoles (which i can't) we can wait for the price to go down while still getting first party & 3rd party titles for the 360 a few more years after the new console drops. Also weigh the option between PS4 and whatever M$ comes out with. Hopefully they stand by thier word.
