I think it's disturbing that this game is only running at 45 frames per second at this point in time. The way the developers were talking, it sounded like they want the game to be able to reach the 60 frames per second goal, but it sounds like there is an excellent chance they won't be able to achieve it, which means the framerate would then be dropped to 30 frames per second. This is the same thing that happened to Resistance: Fall of Man, and caused it to get such mixed reviews, particularly for the European launch when that game would receive scores of only 6 out of 10.

I also think it wasn't a good thing the way the developers tried to avoid answering questions about Online Co-Op modes. Resistance: Fall of Man doesn't have an Online Co-Op mode, and it sounds like Ratchet & Clank won't either, which is a BIG disappointment.

It just seems like Sony's developers are living in the past. If you liked these games in the past, you MIGHT like them now, since features like Rumble are now longer included. People looking for new gameplay with new features that can now be considered "standard" this generation, like Online Co-Op, are not found in these sort of Playstation 3 games, which is a major problem for people looking for those sorts of standard features.

These guys did a better job in their interview than the boss of Insomniac, though. He was almost as bad as Phil Harrison. The way the boss at Insomniac was running his mouth about how Gears of War had so much better graphics was really making wonder who was signing that guys paychecks, Sony or Microsoft.

Note: In paragraph 3 I accidentally typed "now," when I meant to say that features like Rumble are "NO" longer included.

UPT - I look at games development from a different point of view, 45fps at this point in development is a good sign that with optimization they will hit 60fps, not lock in at 30fps like you suggest.

I do agree that the lack of a definite yes to online play is worrying, this should be standard in most games and it's an area that the PS3 is definitely lagging well behind th 360. This is not a PS3 issue, but a lack of a proper online strategy from Sony. Hopefuly this will change with 'Home'.

Insomniac did a great job of pulling Resistance together for launch and saving Sony's butt (imo. it was the only game worth buying for about 2-3months). If they can create a game like that under pressure and it was their first time with the Hardware, I look forward to seeing their future projects.

Response to Sky:

Screenshots from Sony are obviously not something we can trust. I think that goes without saying.

Ratchet & Clank isn't a "bad looking" game, but it certainly isn't anything "impressive," especially when compared to other next-generation competition.

We need to remember that we recently received a reminder that Sony cannot be trusted, even with screenshots. With God of War 2, Sony posted Internet Screenshots at a resolution of 720p, even though the game runs at only 480p.

Sooooo, once again, I think screenshots from PS3 games need to be taken with a grain of salt due to Sony's terrible reputation for being a dishonorable competitor--certainly one of the worst Japan has to offer in terms of thier refusal to acknowledge basic things, such as problems with lithium laptop batteries, saying the PS2 is capable of real-time graphics like the movie Toy Story (which never came close to happening), and providing all of those false demonstrations of PS3 games at the 2005 E3 show.

See why I am one of the millions of people who really questions the things I see from Sony in screenshots.

But, like I said, from an unbiased point of view, I would say Ratchet & Clank on the PS3 looks "Good," but certainly not "Great." I would probably rate the screenshots I have seen about a 7.5 on a scale of 1-10. The overall graphics will depend a LOT on the framerate of the game, though. The problem with that is the fact that choppy unsmoothre framerates have been one of the MAJOR problems with Playstation 3 games from virtually all developers.
Written by Sky on 2007/04/10

lol u dont trust those screens? since when is insom known for posted fake screens? lol ur a funny guy
Written by Itaintrite on 2007/04/10

If you think Ratchet & Clank screenshots look "good", most of the Xbox360's upcoming games must look "mediocre" to your standards.

"The problem with that is the fact that choppy unsmoothre framerates have been one of the MAJOR problems with Playstation 3 games from virtually all developers."

*gasps* I think one of the major problems with Playstation 3 games is that a lot of the ones out right now are multiplatforms. Shitty ports from xbox360 by lazy developers. And it's not like 360's games never have any framerate problem.. right. If you want to be fair, compare next year's PS3 games with this year's 360 games.
Written by Unbiased Technology Professor on 2007/04/10

I would also say that I agree with our friend, "The Limey," that it is always interesting to see what developers have learned from their first experience making a game for a hardware platform. Just look at how awesome Gears of War was on Epic's first experience with the Xbox 360. That is why I am already looking forward to Gears of War 2 when it is released in a couple years at about the same time the movie is released. I'm looking forward to the upcoming Perfect Dark 2 game, as well.

If the PS3 didn't have such a bad reputation when it comes to framerate problems, I would probably agree with The Limey about the current 45fps thing. But that is something that worries me, because it tells us a few things.

1. The developers are obviously trying to target something higher than 30 frames per second, due to gameplay reasons.

2. The developers are currently unable to achieve their goal.

3. The PS3 has a very bad reputation with framerates.
Written by Itaintrite on 2007/04/10

As for the 45fps at this point of development, I guess that means Epic's U.T. 3 game for xbox360 will be pretty shitty too. This time last year, it was only running at 40-ish fps.
Written by Unbiased Technology Professor on 2007/04/10

4. Perhaps most importantly, this is so similar to what happened with Resistance: Fall of Man. The developers will likely end up making the decision between 60fps and 30fps at the last minute, depending on if they can get a smooth 60fps. If they can't, then the gameplay will be goofed up at 30fps, because it was supposed to be played at 60fps and the gameplay was designed to hopefully use that framerate.

I think we need to wait and see what happens, though. Only time will tell.

Response to Itraintrite:

What are you talking about...at this point last year Unreal Tournament 2007 had not been confirmed for the Xbox 360...you reminded us of that many times...remember???

If there were framerate problems, it was because of the Officially announced PS3 version.

@@@@@@ UTP

Project GHOTAM racing 3 had poor framerates (30fps) and i dindnt saw a post of you about it.
Written by Nemesis IX on 2007/04/11

wheather those screens are fake or not, i don't really care never been into R@C, on the Frame rates, 45 frames for a non-racing game is just fine, i was told by a very experienced lecturer at college that the average gamer normally only ever notice's the frame rate in racing games and twitch action FPS's such as unreal. plus the human eye can only see fluid objects(not blurry) at 18 fps's and can perceive more than 220 fps most people think its only 60+. anything around 60 fps is enough.
Written by The Limey on 2007/04/11

UTP - Oblivion is a example of how given time a developer can make improvements in frame rate. Look at the 360 version when it was first released, it ran OK but did stutter a lot in key areas, this has improved through various patches. The PS3 version is a good improvement above the 360 and nearly on par with high spec PC.

Frame rate has nothing to do with hardware constraints at the moment, neither console has been pushed anywhere near it's limits. The issue remains time and how much pressure is being put on the developer to meet the target dates.

Launch games are normally rushed and have been built using poor dev kits on unfamiliar and unfinished hardware .

Written by jlemdon on 2007/04/11

wow U guys just won't ignore UTP,UTP do state facts a lot but I dunno about this time.

I mean if Sonic can reach 60FPS then Ratchet&Clank could indefinitly.
Written by VaeVictus on 2007/04/11

Sorry jlemdon, UTP and facts are oxymorons. I agree with you that everyone should ignore him though.

Soon, we'll be reading about his adventures in his very own "Jonestown" where he gathers his stuffed animals to a crappy central American country to live in exile to worship all things MS. Will he force his beloved Care Bears to drink the kool aid?

As far as Ratchet and Clank are concerned, there will be no problems with the game. Insomniac can handle developing on the PS3 as previously shown w/ Resistance. If they do not include online play, that would be a major mistake. This series is ripe for online play.
Written by jlemdon on 2007/04/11

no he is right about how sony tries to show us demoed CG and tells everyone that the game will actually look like it.

remember killzone 2 ppl.
Written by VaeVictus on 2007/04/11

He only states what he reads on other sites/forums (aka the obvious, so don't give him credit for someone else's work/comments. Everyone knows CGI when they see it. The flaws of Sony are evident to everyone. What he does is unnecessary at best.

Anyway, let's not pollute a thread about R&C w/ all of this UTP talk.
Written by sicbud on 2007/04/11

lol once again UTP takes a huge dump in a sony thread. Honestly, who really cares about graphics.. I want good gameplay and judging from the other Ratchet and Clank games the gameplay is really fun! I can't wait to play this one
Written by VaeVictus on 2007/04/11

The graphics look fine to me. The R&C series never was intended to fit in w/ the likes of God of War on the PS2 in terms of graphics, but they graphics have always been good. The gameplay elements have made the series one of the more beloved and enjoyed original IP's of the last generation. Insomniac knows how to deliver, and I personally have no doubt that they will. That's my opinion, I'll stick by it.
Written by Gamesblow on 2007/04/11

Honestly who really cares about UTP's opinion? I know... I know... nobody! He claims to be unbiased and fails miserably at it and then he can't even decipher the simple fact that Insomniac are not Sony. Insomniac are Insomniac. Those are Real Time gameplay pics and the game is only 15 frames out from running at 60 fPS and it's still not hitting for almost a year now... Yeah, something tells me you're just a little put off by Sony and Insomniac all together.

Written by MAKAVELI on 2007/04/11

@@@ Gamesblow

You got no room to speak about UTP , since you are clearly Biased.

Quote.

"Not a surprise... The silver PS3's hit this fall with a larger HDD... By then Sony will be able to drop the 60 gig price down to 500 and so forth and so on. Who'd want a 20 gig PS3 anyways?

That's almost as pointless as owning an xbox 360"

Actually, I thought I made my post clear there, jimmy... I meant to say the core xbox 360. Nice try, though, ya spooner!
Written by arthur56k on 2007/04/11

graphics look good, they will get better, and the title is currently running at 45 fps, they have a tonne of time to get it to 60fps, as for UTP, i really dont care what poeple say of him, yes he is biased, but please show me an individual who isnt, i see poeple like sky, mr new york, and the whole sony PR crew post dubious stuff, never have i seen a huge outcry like this, ignore him or tell him off, that is what i do, and he at least gives facts to show his arguement, sometimes outdated, biased, and sometimes really great info, think poeple should stop being hypocrites
Written by mr new york on 2007/04/11

@ UTP Please, go ahead and point out this 'fact'. I would love to see that quote by Sony. I have seen it mentioned a million times but for some reason no one has been able to provide where this 'fact' originated from.

Toy story graphics.

@Arthur56k For you information dude these ps3 threads get fired on by UTp that's what get me started.Utp

Starts BS us sony fans sometime get upset and respond

to the moron. Also that's where my so call dubious stuff come from.So please next time keep my name out

your mouth and do a lil research on the history of The KING OF TROLLS.

Gives fact lol When?

lol^^^^
Written by daveydz3 on 2007/04/11

my opinion is that i've never been into R&C, but its too early to say anything about it but go on the promise that it's gonna be a good game because of insomniac's--not sony's-- reputation.

this game comes out what early 2008 maybe? why speculate now, any publicity whether sky's post or UTP's post for this game is good publicity, especially at this point.
Written by Sky on 2007/04/11

@ Davey

the game comes out in September of this year.. so its actually very far along

Written by Guest on 2007/04/13

What i've seen and read about this game looks really great. If you've played past games in the series and if Insomniac does what they have always done in games and that's make them fun to play it's win/win for ps3 owners. P.S, To whomever this utp person is if you're not being paid by Microsoft you should be.
