20 GB Playstation 3 To Be Officiallly Discontinued >
2007/04/12 12:27:29: Posted by DM
SCE has officially discontinued the 20GB Playstation 3 model. This comes after weeks of reports that the 20GB model was being dropped by retil stores. This is a shame as well since the 20GB model was the best value when you replaced the HDD with your own 120GB store-bought drive.

Sony mustn't be making much money if they discontune a new product this early, they didnt even release it in europe.
Written by madgunde on 2007/04/12

Not a big surprise. Apparently the ratio of 60GB to 20GB unit sales was like 10:1 in North America. I think anyone who was willing to part with the money had no problem justifying the extra $100 to get the bigger hard disk, WiFi and memory card slots.

Having a single SKU keeps things simpler for the consumer, and also reduces manufacturing & distribution costs. This does seem to lend support to the theory that PS3 buyers aren't phased by the price too much though.

I think sony will not do the same thing in Europe where the ps3 60gb model costs £425.

And i know tha many people find it too expensive. well with a 20gb model , could easily cost around £359 , which would be a great price in order to compete with the xbox360.

Also , people can add their own Hard disk later , which will be cheaper than any of those overpriced Xbox360 Hard disks.

Finally i can agree with you Tecno_Geek. The xbox 360 hard disks are priced rediculously, its like €100 for a 20 gig HDD..

And btw there's no 20 gig ps3 in europe, only the €630 60 gig

It would be good if Ms alow us to add or own external hardrives.
Written by Eamo on 2007/04/12

definately, it is possible through USB sure
Written by Tecno_Geek on 2007/04/12

Its possible trough modchip , well but that is illegal off course.

But maybe is what i going to do , IF Microsoft continues to overcharge me for their hard disck and refusing to add external hard drive suport via usb.

As always Sony PS is bulls**** YOU.

Too much MONEY LOST on 20GB.

And it was used as a cheap Bluray player [= BIG LOSS for Sony]

That's why they killed it.

"An in-depth teardown of the PlayStation 3 shows that the materials and manufacturing costs of the system amount to $805.85 and $840.35 for the 20GB and 60GB version, respectively.

Electronics supply chain researcher iSuppli’s analysis showed that ****Sony loses $306.85 per 20GB**** hard-drive equipped PS3 sold, not including packaging, controller or cables. ***The amount is greater than the loss incurred from the 60GB model,*** which has a $241.35 difference between the cost and retail price."

thats pretty much it sony are losing to much money for the 20GB version.

Tecno the only problem though with getting a modchip is i heard MS are very good at detecting unauthorised material on the 360 and then bricking your console. if it was possible i would definitaly use a portable harddrive for my 360.

Ok here is why keeping the 60GB is a good idea.

The 60GB PS3 gives the consumer virtually everything they need (except hd cables lol) built into one package. Sony has a big download initiative coming with games, and 20GB isn't going to cut it. Better to get rid of the weak link now. Plus this allows sony to drop the price this fall on the model consumers are actually buying. Consumers have shown a history of wanting the better version of a console.
Written by Eamo on 2007/04/12

But in the present day people want better games for the console before they buy it, thats a fact

i thought that that they should have stuck with it, but retailers like best buy had started boycotting it, if i was going to get the ps3, it would have been the 20 gig,but i would have really missed the memory card slots

This really does a lot of damage to the Playstation 3 business plan strategy for some fundamental reasons:

(1) Sony had a plan of using the PS3 as a method of increasing Blu-ray popularity. Sony thought some people might buy a $499 PS3, just because they wanted the cheapest Blu-ray player available, even though the Playstation 3 has by far the weakest library of next-generation games. By removiing the $499 version of the Playstation 3 from the market, Sony has effectively raised the price of the least expensive Blu-ray player on the market to $599 in the form of the 60GB PS3. Overall, the discontinued 20GB PS3 shows that Sony's fundamental business plan strategy literally now lacks the foundation it was originally built on.

(2) The Playstation 3 likely never would have reached the magic price points of $199, $149, and $129. Each of those price points opens up a brand-new target market of consumers, far larger than the markets of $399-$599. The only "chance" the PS3 had of reaching those pricepoints at any time in its life, other than clearnance, was with the 20GB version. The 60GB version is simply not capable of reaching those price points, which means it is now almost officially impossible for the PS3 to obtain anything close to the level of success achieved by the PS1 or PS2.

(3) I pride myself on being an unbiased person, and when I look at potential "positives" that could come from Sony's decision, I have come to the conclusion that there are none. This can be considered "more disappointing bad news" for the Sony Playstation 3.
