We recently told you about the new trademark registered by Square -- The Last Remnant. Well, this month's GI has the scoop about a new Square RPG called, what else, The Last Remnant. Square is really deviating from the standard RPG formula with this game, and we think it may be the beginning of a new RPG dynamic. Make sure to read all of the info by clicking read more. Here are the details.

The game, for next-gen consoles, takes place one thousand years ago. Back then, humanity came into contact with Remnants. These magical fragments of a bygone era were used to promote peace across the world. Soon, as the rift grew between those who ruled and those who obeyed, the remnants ceased being instruments of balance, and instead became paths to immeasurable power. Where once there had been peace, only bloodshed remained. Sounds like a classic Square RPG storyline. Now on to the actual game info.

The Last Remnant will be released simultaneously in the U.S. and Japan, wow! The game will feature two prominent characters, and one of each will appeal to the gamers of the different regions. In other words, Rush Sykes, one of the protagonists, will appeal to JP gamers, and "The Conqueror," the other protagonist, will appeal to Western audiences. The game will not force you to choose which character you play. The remnants themselves vary in size and can take the form of machines, beasts, and weapons. The game will feature at least 4 races: Mitra (humans), Yama (Large fish-like beings), Qsiti (small humanoid lizards), and Sovanni (four armed cat like creatures). No word on which races have what strengths. The game's battle system will not be passive, and will include QTEs in certain instances. Do not be mistaken though, the game is still going to be turn-based. Technically speaking, this is the first game that Square will release that utilized the Unreal Engine 3.0 technology, and GI says it looks great.

This game actually marks a departure from the traditional RPG formula. The game being released simultaneously worldwide, and having two main characters, each appealing to different world areas, are both vertible leaps forward in RPG formula. This one has potential folks, stay tuned for more info.

This may be the first Square game I buy in a long, long time. The only thing that can hold me back now is the character design. I hate Nomura's faggy style.

I'm glad it uses the Unreal 3.0 engine. It seems every Xbox 360 game that uses that engine ends up with great graphics because it was built for the PC and 360 with Direct 3D in mind as the number one priority.

Uh oh... another X360 you-know-what.

I'm totally against developers using the Unreal 3.0 engine. Not that it's a bad engine. Oh well, let's see how this game turns out.

I don't mind another UE3 title. From what I'm seeing thus far each of the 360's UE3 titles all seem to be going in totally different directions and are seperating themselves from the pack. I think of it like the movie industry. Every movie is made with a camera, but that doesn't matter. What they choose to record on that camera and how they choose to present it to an audience is what ultimately defines what that movie is all about.

In our unique case the Unreal 3 engine happens to be our camera.

With that said I think we have more than enough to see that Too Human, Mass Effect and Lost Odyssey are unique experiences and once you really dig into one of these games I doubt you'll be thinking to yourself Man Too Human makes me feel like I'm playing Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect or Gears of War. If you give either of the games a chance that is. To nobody in particular, but I think it needed to be said.

i never thought i'd see a rpg on an unreal engine, unreal 2 was a shooter engine and thats pretty much it but UNReal3 seems more versatile, i can't wait to test it out in September.
