Please enlighten me on why this would be a HUGE blow to the PS3.

HD-DVD add-on retails (or at least, retailed) for $199. You think a Blu-ray add-on would cost any less? And for $199, I think most casual buyers would get a standalone Blu-ray player, which will be barely more expensive by then.

Doubt that it will happen, but even if it did, it wouldn't do much other than HELP Sony. They are after-all co-owner of the propriety format.

It's not happening. The "war" will be decided by Wal-Mart, and they're picking only one format--the cheapest one. That's HD-DVD. Makes no sense for MS to release a Blu-ray drive. It'd be damn stupid to do so, in fact.

Since Sony owns Blu-ray that means MS will have to pay royalties to Sony to produce the Blu ray add on. Does Sony get paid for the movies placed on the blu ray format as well? So can you explain once again how this will be a blow to Sony?

Actually, Sony doesn't own Blu-Ray. It is not a Sony proprietary format. They helped develop it and have a very vested interest in it's success.

They don't own it, but they do get royalty fee's for ever Blu-Ray disk made as well as players.

Surely you jest? Sony happens to own a huge movie studio that only sells HD movie discs in Blu-Ray format. They are the founders of the Blu-Ray Disc association and spearheaded the technology. It is in their best interests that Blu-Ray wins the format war, so how exactly will Microsoft conceding and releasing a Blu-Ray drive for the 360 be a blow to Sony? In reality, it would be good for both companies, but in the short term, Microsoft would lose some face for backing the wrong horse so to speak, and to a lesser extent justify Sony's decision to include Blu-Ray in the PS3.

This will happen if Blu-Ray comes out as the clear winner, but I don't see it happening for a while, probably not until next year at the earliest, unless data shows HD-DVD really starting to tank in sales.

I still dont get why Microsoft made an HD-DVD drive other than to try an be a thorn in Sony's side in the high-definition DVD format war. Why turn around and release a Blue-Ray add on??? Just stay to games Microsoft please. Work on improving developers tools, online features, manufacturing issues (though I have only heard, not experienced), bringing the MSRP down. U know the things that will benefit us gamers...

He did, though I do remember he initially blew off the questions b/c he didn't want to address it.

it is possible on the 360 they said it before in launch in 2005 if they feel a need to it can be done. but then they took it back a couple days later claming business blah blah..

@Shutemdown. not to start a flam but this site is not pro MS. if you go to most general gaming site they mostly post the same news, Maybe your just upset at sony's bad press instead of the site. -- Grow up a little.

I disagree with you about this site's bias. It's not a huge bias, where they'll openly bash the PS3 or Sony, but they often do spin a neutral or even positive situation into a negative one. This article is a perfect example of that. I mean, it's an article about the 360, yet they still have to get a little shot in against the PS3. They don't do the opposite.

@Mad, go to Gamepro. got Gamespot. 1up I could name a few but I don't know if I'll get in trouble for it. go to any general gaming site and read the articles then the comments on the article and you'll see it the same thing. so basicly you can pick and choose which gaming site you think is bais instead of accepting the fact the PS3 has alot of bad press. Everytime the PS3 come up the 360 is right there maybe because it is it's Competitor and there is no other system to compare it too.. take that into count too. Whine to Sony or shut it.

Back to the topic: MS is not gonna make any Blu-ray annoucement atleast not this year.. I could put some money on that.

Will not happen. This thing will be over when the sub $200 HD-DVD player hit Walmart by years end. So no need to make a Bluray player add-on for a soon to be dead media format.

I just want to play games. I could give a crap about blue ray or hddvd. I have not even bought a dvd in my life. All the dvd's I have (about 6) have been gifts to me. I want to play games not movies on my freaking console. I don't need a freaking media center, I already have a computer for that.
