MS Admits All 11.6 Million Xbox360 Units Defective? >
2007/07/13 15:23:04: Posted by DM
This certainly does not seem like something that Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo would admit, but according to CRN, every Xbox360 released to date, suffers from the fatal flaw that allows the red ring of death to take hold. We will have to wait for confirmation from MS on this one before we un-rumor it, but we supposed it could be true.

Recall please. This is my 2nd 360 that got the red ring of death and i'm sick of sending it in.
Written by Matt on 2007/07/13

I don't want to send in my perfectly fine 360. Fuck a recall.
Written by poprocker on 2007/07/13

Had my 360 for over a year now and still no RRoD.
Written by DM on 2007/07/13

anyone else heard of this CRN website?
Written by Smarty Pantz on 2007/07/13

Methinks the CRN website glorified the headline.. nowhere did MS say that all their consoles were defective. In fact, they talked around specific numbers/percentages very effectively.
Written by whYte420 on 2007/07/13

Sounds like bullshit to me
Written by PimpDaddy on 2007/07/13

I am sure the there is a design flaw for the 360. Thats why they are working on getting the "Falcon" based 360 manufactued this fall. But I know plenty of people who have not experienced the red rings of death too. I myself have not fallen victim to this design flaw and Microsoft extended the warranty to 3 years to cover my console in case I am unfortunate enough to experience this "FLAW". At least Microsoft admits to this problem. I seem to recall having a PS1 and PS2 take a SH!T on me and Sony never admitted to any known issues, instead they redesigned the console to get around the issue...
Written by Unbiased Technology Professor on 2007/07/13

I fully agree with each of the four people directly above me, the CRN website headline said things that didn't agree with what Microsoft said. I have an Xbox 360 that has been fine ever since I bought it at launch. And I have dozens of friends who have never had any problems with their Xbox 360. This particular is nonsense, just like WhYte420 said.
Written by blah on 2007/07/13

Yeah it probably is nonsense, but I'm too lazy to send mine in again. RECALL.
Written by hbnpdb7fw1lk5nlq7slk1na8jvps4bdp on 2007/07/14

blah, if you are too lazy to send yours in for one thing, you would be too lazy to send it in for another. i bet you don't have a laptop because of Sony's laptop battery computer recall last year. Now that was a batch of defective products!
Written by MAKAVELI_ on 2007/07/14

For the sake of this website , stop using multi alias , we are sick of reading trough that , i mean , you open a thread and there is 5 or 6six posts of utp agreing with himself , so you go to roll the big side side bar to the end just to bypass all that old microsoft mini eassays lessons of utp.

It's boring , frustating and im sick of this trool ruling the website!!!!

@@@@@@@@@ UTP.
Written by Itaintrite on 2007/07/14

UTP, you have dozens of friends who've never had any problems. Well, everybody I know has gone through at least 1 360, and most of them didnt even buy the console at launch.

Anyhow, I guess admitting console failure rate is 33% is still better than this.
Written by WithoutPrejudiceGamer on 2007/07/14

What we know... 11.6 million units sold

1.15 billion dollar budget to fix unspecified flaw

simple math: $1,150,000,000 budget solution

11.6 x 100% = 11,600,000 = $99.13 per unit budget

11.6 x 33% = 3,866,666 = $297.41 per unit budget

11.6 x 5% = 58,000 = $19,827.59 per unit budget

PS: I call BS on UPTs statement that he has dozens of friends. I'm guessing he only has two or three. jk lol
Written by WithoutPrejudiceGamer on 2007/07/15

We also know...

At no point has manufacturing irregularities been publicly blamed for the flaws.

We have also been told that all current inventory and new units have/will receive the "upgrade". This points to a fundamental design flaw: most likely an inadequate assembly spec or deficient component spec. Maybe both... it seems they're being pretty ambiguous about all the known problems.

A design flaw = ALL units up until the new design are affected.

A component flaw = ALL units up until the updated component are affected.

From the information publicly released, one could easily speculate that ALL units are affected. But not all units will necessarily fail ... due to particular shipping, usage and environment stresses. ie: UTP's console won't fail because he doesn't play games. He's too busy posting here all the time... under all his various alias'. ;)

1.15 billion is a lot of money, but it had to be an easy call to make:

a. It is cheap compared to what a class-action suit would likely have cost them. 5 to 10 billion minimum.

b. Certain loss of their lead in the current next-gen HD console war as the negative press of an ongoing suit would have put the death nail in future console sales and reduced consumer confidence for the whole MSFT conglomerate.

c. They have deep pockets and are in the gaming console/set-top box market for the long haul. It's a long-term strategic business investment and currently a tax write-off.

This kind of problem is not too surprising from an organization whom is traditionally a software development company. "Ship it on time. We'll patch it later if we discover a problem." is one of the mantras within the very fast-paced and highly competitive software industry. Even from the best of developers. It's an intrinsic quality.

However, a quality hardware company traditionally over-engineers and or de-tunes performance in order to operate well within manufacturing spec and withstand the expected rugged life of consumer product usage. A lesson MSFT is learning.

I know around 30 people that own a 360 and only two of them have had the red lights of death. My brother has gotten it twice and my buddy at work got it a few weeks ago. I still have my launch 360 and a 360 Elite, and I have never had a problem with either of them. And now if I ever do run into a problem, I'm pretty much covered for the rest of this console generation thanks to MS and the 3 year warranty. I think it's safe to say I'm a happy customer.

the 360 wont make it in 2008.. mark my words
Written by madgunde on 2007/07/15

This issue hadn't been publicized when I made my decision to buy a PS3 instead of a 360. I had other reasons (and I owned an XBox in the last generation, not a PS2). Microsoft's red ring of death fiasco just helps reinforce my decision.

I am left wondering why it took a year and a half for Microsoft to fully own up to the issue and fix it. Not very confidence inspiring if you ask me...
Written by PimpDaddy on 2007/07/15

Sky: lat time we marked your words U said that the PS3 was going to take over worldwide sales come march when it launched in Europe. Please just go back into retirement now. Nobody is going to buy the PS3 at its current price point. Dont U have some Waiting Beyond to do??? or maybe some Playstation Executives Pole to polish??? Either way for U to say something as ridiculous as 11 million owners not not making it... Oh I forgot U think that time will stand still in your 4D world. That nobody else will buy a 360, and that developers will stop making games for the 360 right??? Give me UTP's repeated novels vs your 1 sentence blasphemy!!!!!
Written by B1ueBurneR on 2007/07/15

@PimpD. why why why you had to get at him first, I wanted to take a shot at sky first, just to welcome him back. Damn ok next time he post its my turn ok PimpD. Damn but you took the words right out of mouth, European launch, retirement, the whole nine. You know what I think is happening the Phillzone 2, Heavenly Flop and Liars preview is bringing them back to life something they can post about. Just remember PimpD I go next, ok.

A MS rep. already said its not all 11million units, what I think happened is being that they had several Company Making the 360. One Company fucked it up somewhere while the other one didn't.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2007/07/15

Ok 10 million??? U can have the next crack at him if U want, did I leave any stone unturned????? U know its hard for me to admit that the 360 does have manufacturing problems. But I guess all the latest data and news points to a design flaw. Thank God I havent experienced this red rings of death problem. for as much bad press as Miucrosoft got, at least they admitted to the problem and are doing something about it. A 3 year warranty for a consumer electronics device??? Thats unheard of, unless U pay your local retailer for an extended warranty. I am hoping for a price drop across the board Core: $199.00 Premium: $299.00 Elite: $399.00 if that happens along with the "falcon" based new 360's, I will "Jump In" again :p
Written by Sky on 2007/07/15

MS is on that tight rope about to fail.. think about it... in 1 year they claimed they sold 10 million 360's right? now its been 7 months and there at 11.6? WTF? there slowing down.. people are getting smarter realizing MS shoddy hardware.. how could u recommend to your best friend to buy a 360? you just cant

its obvious now after E3 too that Sonys games look better.. nobody can deny that.. im not even going to mention games... u allready know

Written by arthur56k on 2007/07/16

sony sold less than them every month since the ps3 launched, you notice you are looking like an idiot, spare us, as far as E3 is concerned, all the games looked great, halo looked better, while mass effect was the best looking title, so what sort of noise are you making
Written by B1ueBurneR on 2007/07/16

@Sky, all Jokes aside, I wish you the best of Luck when you get deployed.

Sky I have to admit, the games looked good, but when you say look better, I question look better than what, Other PS3 games? The Wii Games? Like Athur56K, they're is no denying that Mass effect was the best looking titile out there. I'll say second was Rachet and Clank, 3rd. UT3, 4th. Halo 3. 5th. Killzone. 6. Heavenly Flop.
Written by The Limey on 2007/07/16

$1 Billion/$11.6Million is about $86.00 for every XBOX sold, maybe this is real. I would guess that MS are hoping that the new 65nm Falcon board fixes the issue in the fall.
Written by B1ueBurneR on 2007/07/16

@The Limey, Once again MS said its not all 11.6 million of the 360,
Written by The Limey on 2007/07/16

@B1ueBurneR- 11.6million or not 1 billion is a load of money to have in reserve for warranty claims, even if it is 50% it is still massive. The new board will take care of this issue in the fall, MS will make sure that it will not make the same mistake twice.
Written by Sky on 2007/07/16

@ B1ueBurneR

i disagree with you on that.. Mass effect wasent the best looking game @ e3... mass effect uses the unreal engine like many other games this gen... and unreal tourny for the ps3 wipes the floor compared to mass effect.. obviously because epic got the most out of the engine visually on the ps3... that you cannot deny..check the screenshots again.. if anyone can get the most of the engine.. lol its the creator.. and its showcased on the ps3

Now IMO sony's first party is leading this gen with visuals... that covers lighting.. shader effects, scale and animations... the problem with mass effect that i noticed in the lip sync issue.. watch the trailer again... then watch the opening scene on KZ2 and tell me which looks more believable

my top games of E3 are

gran turismo 5

KZ2

uncharted

mass effect

COD4

Lair

Its funny how Sky sounds just like an E3 recap from the Sony convention. He sounds so educated. I mean he must have seen all these games firsthand right? And played them too? He is so convinced that Sony can do no wrong and that we are going to finally see these 4D games... I mean screenshots is the only way to judge a game, or better yet game trailers. Oh yeah Sony games are the SHIZNIT right Sky??? Smuggle Sony Sausage much? Polish Playstation Pole much?

To be honest though Sky I did watch the Sony E3 conference, I was impressed with thier games, but no more so than the 360's games. I still dont get how U Sony fanboys can knock all Microsofts games like they dont hold a candle to Sonys games. Both the 360 and PS3 are pretty much on par in graphics capabilities. I have to admit the PS3 becomes more attractive all the time, but I am still "Waiting Beyond" to see if these games live up to thier hype...
Written by Unbiased Technology Professor on 2007/07/16

As far as Sky's list of games go:

Gran Turismo 5 won't be released on the PS3 until late 2008 or early 2009. That is why they have a demo coming out "sometime in 2008." Gran Turismo 5 doesn’t' have much detail, and there is no damage to the cars. That may have been okay during the last generation of the PS2, but NOT this generation because the Xbox 360 has raised the standard with games like Forza Motorsport 2 and Project Gotham Racing 4 that DO include damage to the cars.

As far as Killzone 2 goes...That is another one that won't be available until sometime until late 2008. And I think Sky would get excited for a game as crappy as E.T. The Extraterrestrial 2 if it were released for the PS3...Sky needs to wake up and realize that games like E.T. and Killzone were rated very poorly by reliable places like IGN and Gamespot. Scores like 6.9 from IGN do NOT represent the sort of game that deserves a sequel. It's like the song goes, "But Killzone one, sucked bee-fore, so what makes you think we want it more."

Also, Lair is the sort of game that could EASILY end up with scores that really SUCK, because it depends so much on the sixaxis controls, which definitely lacks precision.

Lair and Uncharted didn't even make the Top 20 list of Next-Generation games that people are looking forward after the E3...and neither did Heavenly Sword--the game that was first offered to Microsoft, but was declined. The developers of that game are the same group of crappy developers that made Kung Fu Chaos. All they did was change the name of their development company (because their reputation was ruined) and start working on a different game.

Sorry captain spinster. Each of you defending the 360 is nothing short of sad. There is no defense for the failure rates. Congratulations to each of you, you bought a 3 year warranty for $400+, I hope you are happy.

To think any game on the 360 looked any better than the PS3's terrific offerings is showing your poor vision or terrible taste.(outside of Call of Duty 4, cross platform, nothing held a candle to KZ2 graphically)

Be a gamer, take the red ringed glasses off. Just b/c some magazine or web blog didn't list these games in the top 20 doesn't mean jack. Unbiased should go into counseling. If any more bad news hits the MS camp, you'd think he'd have a breakdown with how fervantly he defends faulty hardware.
Written by Fair and Balanced Tech Teacher on 2007/07/16

Also worth noting that Australia's EB game branches recalled all premium 360's, not a lot going on right now that MS can pat themselves on the back about. Even Peter Moore stating that KZ2 looks like a reason to buy a PS3. Keep the gun out of your mouth Unbiased, it's only a console.
Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2007/07/17

the situation of a very small product recall in australia had nothing to do with xbox 360 hardware. in fact, it was only the premium systems because the problem was with the Hard Drives. It was only ONE bad batch, and the problem was identified immedetely, that is why there was a recall.

Xbox 360 has the best warranty in the history of gaming. Even if you only got 5 minutes of AWESOME gaming on your Xbox 360, that would be 5 minutes more than you would get on the PS3, because the PS3 doesn't have ANY good games!
Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2007/07/17

Sky, if you want to play the game of “fanboy,” I will swat you down every time! Here are a few good things for you to watch that will remind you of how crappy the Playstation 3 is. That’s why it’s also called the Fony Plagiarization 3DO:

It's like the song says,
