Dyack From Silicon Knights Says Canada Dev Subsidies 'Insane >
2007/11/20 8:59:31: Posted by DM
Silicon Knights main man Denis Dyack, ever-outspoken, has questioned the long-term effects of government-subsidies in the game industry. Denis is questioning whether or not the compaies taking the subsidies will stay in the area once they are up and running. As well as Silicon Knights, Ubisoft, Eidos, Electronic Arts and others have major development studios in the Quebec region.

"The subsidies in Quebec are, well, insane," commented Dyack to Gamasutra. "Essentially that's the only reason the studios are so big here. Once those subsidies stop, because they can't go on forever... will those businesses stay there, or will they move out, as they're global and mobile?

I'm from Montreal and the center of downtown has Ubisoft and Electronic Arts there. To be honest, I think that these companies will stay simply because the best programmers the companies can hire will literally be a step away from their base of operations. The best public university in all of North America (McGill University) is a five minute walk from Electronic Arts and about a five minute walk from Ubisoft. It produces some of the best programming and design talent the industry will ever see. This talent is usually at least bilingual, if not trilingual and obviously young and experienced in gaming. You simply won't find a better place to base your operations.
