Sony Still Not Giving Up On UMD Video >
2008/01/25 13:24:53: Posted by DM
It seems Sony is just not ready to give up on UMD video. Instead of movies, Sony is now releasing some of their old TV shows on the near-dead format. Shows liek Beavis and Butt-head, Jackass, Wildboyz, Viva La Bam and Aeon Flux will be purchasable on UMD for play on the Sony handheld. Time to give up on UMD Sony.

The UMD format is NOT dead. Its still the format used for PSP games. Of course UMD was not the best thing for movies, but that was not just the fault of Sony alone. Other movie studios brought out tons of movies that did not appeal to the average PSP consumer. Sony's idea now to bring some of its TV properties may be risky, but it may also pay off more so now more than ever. While the PSP is constantly outsold by the more mainstream Nintendo DS, the PSP is far from being a faliure. The userbase of the PSP got a big boost by the slim line version. So we will see how this plays out for them. God knows they do need some more positive news these days.

Naturally UMD is great for PSP games. That alone keeps the format strong. It would be better for movies/video if you could burn your own UMD at home.
