Capcom Comments On 22 Minute PS3 DMC Initial Load Time >
2008/02/05 14:13:06: Posted by DM
Capcom spoke with ArsTechnica briefly to address the recently-brought-to-light 22 minute initial load time for PS3 version owners. Apparently, while the game is loading, you "get to watch a really nifty series of screens that completely catch you up on the DMC4 backstory. Think of it as compressing the last three 'seasons' into a single info blast, accompanied by some fantastic DMC artwork." In other words, no way around it but you get to be entertained while it is going on.

Playstation 3 has a data transfer rate of only 9MB per second, compared to 16MB per second for the Xbox 360.

This is the reason why every PS3 has a hard drive built into it; in order to try and make up for that slow data transfer rate. Amazingly, some games (such as Fight Night 3 and Orange Box) are still incredibly slower on the Playstation 3. For example, in Orange box there is a scene that takes 3 seconds to load on the Xbox 360, but 17 seconds to load on the Playstation 3.

But in the end, the reviews have made it clear that the load times are virtually identical on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360...the only problem is the huge 22 minute load time when installing Devil May Cry 4 on the Playstation 3.

In all honesty, that is the entire reason why Microsoft said that they didn't want a hard drive in every Xbox 360 system. When a console has a hard drive in every system, similar to the PS3 and the PC, then the developers will try to take advantage of it and there will be long installation times, and it will be frustrating.

Plus, I feel REALLY bad for the people who only have the 20GB PS3, because Devil May Cry 4 uses up 25% of the space available!

That's the difference between the PS3 hard drive and the Xbox 360 hard drive...with the PS3 the hard drive is mandatory and required. With the Xbox 360, the hard drive isn't used for Installation Requirements; it is simply used to Save the games and store music and videos.

I think Limey is correct...this was just another example of "poor programming" on the Playstation 3, likely because it is so difficult to work with.
Written by dudeman on 2008/02/05

This is not a "System" issue. It is a game development issue.

If it were a "System" issue all ps3 games would have this issue which is simply not true.
Written by The Ow In Wow8 on 2008/02/05

I agree with krogan, i would also like to point out that i dont get why you cant freaking private chat with someone when playing an OXBG. i think its kinda retarded that they would think of being able to do that when playing the games.

oh sorry wrong post. that wasn't supposed to be here...sorry
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/02/05

dudeman: I think it is a software development issue to get around a "system" hardware issue. PS3's Blu-Ray accesses slower than 360's DVD-9. My only issue is that the game takes 5 GB's of space. If you have the 40GB PS3 thats 1/8 of the total space. I just hope this doesnt become the norm but rather they make this optional.
Written by B1ueBurneR on 2008/02/05

wow what a lame excuse, I Think Capcom wanted to put some emphasis on "wait beyond" to play your game. as if people didn't already feel like suckers buying the system when it first came out. but to get the point that doesn't stop you from enjoying the game.
Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2008/02/05

Even Virtua Fighter 5, a simple fighting game, takes up over 2GB of space on the PS3 hard drive.

The bottom line is that PimpDaddy is correct: The Xbox 360 data transfer rate of 16MB per second is enough to have very fast load times; however, the 9MB per second data transfer rate of the Playstation 3 wasn't fast enough for this particular game. So, they really needed to make some major adjustments that show the problems with Blu-ray for gaming when they need to be put on the hard drive.

I wonder if this particular game has this problem due to the fact that the Playstation 3 was the Lead Platform for development--originally as a Playstation 3 exclusive game, combined with the fact that the Xbox 360 version was announced after the PS3 version was in development.

If that is the case, I wonder how fast the load times will be in comparison to each other for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Final Fantasy 13.

B1ueBurneR, I wonder how long the Playstation 3 version of Final Fantasy 13 will have gamers "Waiting Beyond." And it makes you wonder if the 20GB PS3 will even be large enough, since Blu-ray discs hold up to 25GB of space. It might take up to two hours to install on the PS3 system, leaving no room for other games.

...just a theory, but it is a valid one now that we see this type of situation happening with more games on the Playstation 3.

BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH just delete the data when you finish the game.

I've never heard so much Xbox fanboy crap in my life. You guys seriously havent got a fucking clue.
Written by sicbud on 2008/02/06

boohooo... this game takes 6gb to install wah wah wah.. i have to wait for 22 minutes for the game to install...... jeezus you guys need to get lifes if you seriously are complaining about waiting 22 minutes to play a game.... it's a one time install, not like you have to wait that long before playing it everytime. The xbox360 will always have load times... who cares.. just enjoy the game for the console you have and shutup.
Written by sicbud on 2008/02/06

also, if you are worried a bout 5gb... maybe its time to go out to the store and buy a new hdd for the ps3. See, you can do that with your ps3 and without voiding the warranty. With the xbox360 you are stuck with what you get or you have to pay out the ass to get a bigger one. And so what if the data on the ps3 doesn't transfer as fast as the xbox360. Hmm.. lets see.. ps3 has bluray and xbox360 has dvd9.. ill stick with the bluray and will wait through the load times. Because I'd much rather wait a few extra seconds than having to swap discs like you do with blue dragon. It's a shame that xbox360 games will only be available on the standard dvd9 discs and not the hddvd. I love downloading movies and demos and I'm sure glad that I can upgrade my hdd without much trouble at all.. whereas on my xbox360 im constantly deleting content just so I can download a new demo or movie to try.

Response to sicbud:

The people who paid $500 for their Playstation 3 systems should NOT have to pay all that extra money for an extra hard drive. That is a BIG INCONVENIENCE!!!

PERIOD!!!
Written by Jagosix on 2008/02/06

Wow...I didn't realise that so many people cared so much about load times. Again , The BluRay format doesn't make the games better & niether does the DvD9 format. It's the games on those Discs that make all the difference in the world.

The reason I chose console games over PC games is; ease of use, no installation required, no constant upgrading of hardware. Why should I have to wait 20min everytime a new game comes out just to play it? It should be a choice to load data onto the hard drive, not mandatory.

Also did you all know that those type games (mandatory HDD load) are priced higher than the same game for the X360 in every country but the US. That must suck A$$ big time. Just thank Sony for that. So why would anyone ever chose the PS3 version over the X360? Well.. if only have a PS3, then you have no choice, but if you have them both, just get the X360 version & be done with it.

@Sicbud - I like downloading movies & demos too. But changing a X360 Hdd is way easier than changing a HDD in a PS3. I can just hit the little button on the X360 hdd & it just detaches. I then plug in my 120Gb HDD & it snaps right in. I can do that in under 10 secs.
Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2008/02/06

Also, Blue Dragon is currently the ONLY game available for the Xbox 360 that uses more than one DVD...and there are HUNDREDS of games for the Xbox 360. That LITERALLY means that less than 1% of Xbox 360 games use more than one disc.

And the Red Laser used in the DVD9 Xbox 360 discs allows a data transfer rate almost twice as fast as the Blue laser used in the Playstation 3. That is why Xbox 360 versions of multi-platform games almost always have load times that are either noticably or significantly faster than the Playstation 3 versions.

Response to Shogun Battle Twerp (Also know as: VaeVictus, Without Prejudice Gamer, Ultrabiased Electronics Scholar, and many others):

I'm curious, what bothers you more:

(1) The looooong load time installations with BIG files like the Playstation 3 version of Devil May Cry 4.

or

(2) All of the problems you had getting Unreal Tournament 3 to work properly with your router...PS3 just doesn't work well with that sort of stuff, does it.

*

Seriously, VaeVictus, rather than saying that the majority of people here are "Xbox Fanboys," why don't you just admit that the Xbox 360 version of Devil May Cry 4 provides a better product at a less expensive price; thus making it the superior version.

Everyone else has come to that conclusion in an honest way that looks at facts from a neutral point of view. Why can't you just do the same rather than "swearing," and acting immaturely.

There is no harm in admitting that the Xbox 360 version is superior.
Written by CianMCL on 2008/02/06

they are both the same game

besides 20 mins aint too bad as was said ya have time for a shit.

ya buy a game in town get some food. when ya get home. ya need to take a shit. so load game up let it install go for shit/roll up or put the kettle on
Written by dudeman on 2008/02/06

Jagosix, you don't have to wait 20 minutes the first time you play a ps3 game. This is the ONLY game that does it. chalk it up to back program on the developers part because NOONE else has had this problem.
Written by Hand Banana on 2008/02/06

I was having trouble deciding if i wanted Devil May Cry for PS3 or Xbox360. That is, until last night. While playing Assassin's Creed, my Xbox kept on freezing whenever it had to do any loading. I then began to think about the many "disc read errors" and frozen screens throughout most of my gaming experience with the xbox. That is when i jumped online and ordered Devil May Cry for the PS3. I've never had a single hiccup while playing my PS3.

Sitting through 20 minutes of downloading may seem like torture to you, but i do have other things to preoccupy my time with. My entire life is not encompassed in video gaming. Plus, I will be comforted to know that i can play without saving every five minutes, knowing (not assuming, but knowing) that my damn xbox is going to freeze or give me a disc read error.

You may find superiority in being able to play the second you unwrap the game; myslef, and im sure many others, find it in being able to play the game without worry.

I am by no means a PS3 fanboy; I just like video gaming in general. The 360 had great potential, but at this point I am too fed up with the constant bullshit i have to deal with. I have lost all faith in Microsoft at this point.
Written by incoming00 on 2008/02/06

i just became aware that FFXI on the 360 takes 3 hours to install... so 20 min aint so bad now :D

Response to Hand Banana (Also known by many other names, include the ones I mentioned above):

You claim that "your whole life is not encompassed in videogaming."

LOL...well, that may technically be true, but it appears that a significantly too large percentage of your life is preoccupied making up new screen-names, new email addresses, and new passwords to use on this website, just to annoy people.

It is actually far more respectable to have your life fully encompassed in videogaming than it is to create extra screen-names, for your weird purposes.

Hand Banana,

There is NO DOUBT that the Xbox 360 versions of the overwhelming majority of multi-platform games are either noticably or significantly superior on the Xbox 360.

There is NO DOUBT that the majority of gamers agree that the Xbox 360 version of Devil May Cry 4 is superior to the Playstation 3 version, because the Xbox 360 version does NOT have terrible Installation Requirements like the Playstation 3 version does. Plus, the Xbox 360 version costs less!

If you have an Xbox 360 system that has a defect, then it is up to YOU to return it to Microsoft for repair or replacement!

If you do that, then you can be 100% confident EVERY TIME that the Xbox 360 versions of games like Assassins Creed and Devil May Cry 4 will make you happier than the Playstation 3 versions.

And by the way, I have already read reports on the Internet that people are having Installation problems with Devil May Cry 4 on the Playstation 3, depending on what sort of connection they have with PC files. People have had to try and Install up to SEVERAL TIMES on the PS3, which took HOURS to do. I don't know anyone who can spend that much time "crapping" on the toilet, CianMCL.

I agree with all the people who said that "Installation," is a problem that Consoles are NOT supposed to have. That is the whole reason why we play on Consoles, instead of PC.
Written by Hand Banana on 2008/02/07

Wow. I knew it was only a matter of time before you lumped me in with everyone else. I don't know the community here all too well, so i can't speak for the "others." I can assure you that I am my own person. My XBL tag is Bananas Revenge, if that helps out. PSN ID is Fatty McButterpants.

It seems that your pathetic defense whenever anyone disagrees with you is always "They are the same person creating different IDs." As if it is impossible for more than one person to have a different opinion than you. I'm afraid to ask how old you are, as you display the immaturity of a child more often than not.

And as a response: Yes, there are many games in the past which run much better on the 360; I do not disagree with that. That being said, the game in question (DMC4, if you've lost track) has been stated by several different reviews (1up, as an example you've cited before) as being better quality on the PS3. They have mentioned tearing and lag, which was non-existent in the PS3 version.

I do not see what the big deal is about the installation, but that is my own opinion. Oh well.

And as far as sending my 360 in, I have been told that if it does not red ring, i will have to pay $140. I have the money, no problem, but i cant bring myself to PAY for repairs to the worst made console ever.

I'll just wait until the dust settles and buy an Elite.
Written by incoming00 on 2008/02/07

ok, back the crap bus up urdnot... the 360 version of DMC4 cost the same as the PS3 version, and both of the CE are the same price as well... so i dunno where the hell you getting that the 360 ver is cheaper. oh, and dont forget that you too urdnot have created different ID's, and at times you even had conversations with yourself :P
Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2008/02/07

Response to Hand Banana:

The guy named VaeVictus has created so many names on here that it is difficult to keep up. That much is a proven fact. I don't know how he finds time to do so, considering that Unreal Tournament 3 on the Playstation 3 gave him so many time consuming problems with his router.

TIP: I know that you are telling the truth about Microsoft and their $140 nonsense. If you are having "System Errors," and "Disc Reading Errors," then that is the sort of thing that often generates a single red light, rather than the three light RROD. Just tell Microsoft that you "saw a red light" on the system. If you do that, then they will accept the system. They will likely not be able to re-produce the exact problems that cause the RROD, but they will probably be able to get the System Error and Disc Errors. When that happens, they will send you a Refurbished system that works fine....Sooooo, please do that, and get your new system that will work fine. Then you can buy the Xbox 360 versions of games like Assassins Creed, Madden Football, and Orange Box that are so much better than the PS3 versions.

Response to incoming00:

In Europe and several parts of Asia, the Playstation 3 version of Devil May Cry 4 actually does cost $10 more than the Xbox 360 version. The reason for this is because Capcom says it is up to the retailers what they charge, and the retailers in those regions believe the PS3 version will not sell as well, so they are trying to make up some of the money by charging a higher price.

Incoming00, generally speaking, I stick to one screen name. I have used this name of Urdnot Wrex (character from Mass Effect) for quite a while now. Before that I was the legendary Unbiased Technology Professor for a very long time. And before that I was the immortal mike_mgoblue. But, those names have gone into retire, as will Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex, eventually.
Written by incoming00 on 2008/02/07

you might wanna read this lil snippet regarding the $10 increase...

hxxp://kotaku.com/350915/capcom-fibbing-about-devil-may-cry-4-price-discrepancy-[updated]

basically, although capcom does state that retailers set their own prices, they are "recommending" a $10 increase on the PS3 version :P
Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2008/02/11

Response to incoming00:

Regardless of whether Capcom tells the retailer to charge $10 more for the PS3 version, or whether the retailer decides to charge $10 more on their own, the "Economic" reason for charging $10 more for the Playstation 3 version has to do with the FACT that the Playstation 3 version of Devil May Cry 4 will NOT sell as many as the Xbox 360 version, because the Playstation 3 version cost more to develop, and because there are a certain number of PS3 owners who would buy the game regardless of price.

In the world of Economics, there are times when selling fewer units of a product is actually better for a company, because it will generate more money.

If reliable numbers come in, and you have to make a choice, what would you rather do:

(1) Sell 1,100,000 copies for $100 = $110,000,000 revenue

or

(2) Sell 1,000,000 copies for $110 = $110,000,000 revenue

The amount of revenue generated is exactly the same, but obviously it makes sense for a business to choose #2, since the production costs are 10% lower, which means Net Income will be greater in situation #2.

Capcom knows that a price increase of $10 will prevent very few people from buying the game. And Capcom knows that it is the Playstation 3 owners "who would buy the system, even without games (according to Sony)" that would be willing to pay an extra $10. Capcom knows that the people who care about saving an extra $10 will buy the Xbox 360 version, and that is the way Capcom wants it, because the production costs of the Xbox 360 version are lower.

Simple Economics are why the Playstation 3 versions of games cost more, even though they aren't as good.

Another similar example is the way that Unreal Tournament 3 is better on the PC, yet costs less than the Playstation 3 version.
