PSN Network Numbers >
2008/03/11 11:42:04: Posted by DM
The first solid numbers for the PSN have been released. Apparently there are over 2.8 million registered users of the online PS3 service, with more than 46 million downloads total. Over 50% of PS3 owners go online, which is not surprising, considering it is free. Good start, we wonder what will happen when HOME finally hits.

Krogan should be here soon to let everyone know this is some kind of conspiracy by sony ....LOL.

yea....

he'll be along shortly with some lengthy long winded BS excuse. I think Sony stole his wife or something, who knows. This new is very interest cause I've never bought anything on PSN(it seems slower than Live, maybe it's just me).
Written by kidkit on 2008/03/11

46 million downloads doesn't mean all that much, how many sales are they getting?
Written by dudeman on 2008/03/11

good numbers and will only get better.
Written by dudeman on 2008/03/11

oh and since this is a ps3 article get ready for some 20 or 30 replies of pure fud and hate.
Written by SupremeChaotic on 2008/03/11

Interesting article. The question remains, though, is how much users are actually spending on premium content compared to Xbox Live? The only numbers provided are for total downloads, and the PSN has quite a few free downloands (such as wallpapers and demos).
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/03/11

Here's what I don't understand. There is supposed to be close to 11 million PS3's sold right??? 50% of 11 million would be 5.5 million. How come there is only 2.8 million registered PSN users. Also just so you guys know all these numbers are skewed. Anybody can make a PSN ID or an XBOX Live silver account. I had 2 different PSN ID's when I owned my PS3. One for me and one for my friend. I had to make a 2nd Xbox Live account because my original account was all f*cked up. My wife just made an Xbox Live account 3 weeks ago.

These numbers dont mean crap as far as I am concerned.

And I mean that for both the 360 and PS3. I doubt either companies are being totally honest. And I doubt that either companies numbers truly represent how successful thier online services really are.
Written by B1ueBurneR on 2008/03/11

Damn PimpD we must think alike, because that first line doesn't make any sense. How does 2.8 Millions users equals 50% of 11+ millions? If that didn't raise your eyebrows when you read it, thats mean you do know how to read, but you don't comprehend what your reading. Hence the saying Blind Sony Zombies. Or like a certain Pimp would say Sony Sausages Snugglers.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/03/11

B1ueBurneR: Damn bro you took my catch phrase to a whole new level. Sony Sausage "SNUGGLER" huh????? That sounds even worse than "SMUGGLER".

Not sure if you mispelled it on accident or on purpose. Either way, that shit made me laugh.

I'm not trying it rain on the Sony Defense Force's parade. But these numbers dont add up. Sounds like more Sony Fuzzy math to me. Kinda along the same lines of 120fps 1080P graphics. 4D games.

So basically FUD.

FACTS

I have been saying for YEARS now that Sony's definition of "Sale," is VERY DIFFERENT from what Nintendo and Microsoft classify as a "sale."

I often use the example of the VG Chartz website that is NOT RELIABLE, because the sales of the PS3 increased by OVER one-million systems in just ONE DAY during a non-launch period, simply because that was when Sony changed their definition of what the word "Sale," meant.

VG Chartz does NOT get information from retailers. VG Chartz claims that one of their key sources of information is Sony themselves. That literally means that VG Chartz CANNOT be trusted, because Sony CANNOT be trusted.

Sony has NOT sold 11 Million Playstation 3 systems in the same way that Microsoft has sold 18 Million Xbox 360 systems. Here is the difference:

Microsoft really has sold 18 Million Xbox 360 systems to Consumers, and over 21 Million Xbox 360 systems have been sold to Wholesalers and Retailers.

Sony's definition of a Sale is not "Sold to a Consumer." Sony's CURRENT definition of a Sale doesn't even require the unit to be Sold to a Wholesaler or Retailer. According to Sony's current definition of "Sale," the INSTANT the Playstation 3 system comes off of the production line and is placed in ANY form of Inventory, it is considered a "Sale."

So, according to that TERRIBLY INACCURATE specification, Sony may have "Sold" (e.g. Produced) 11 Million Playstation 3 systems. But in reality, Sony has only "Sold" about 6 Million Playstation 3 systems to Consumers who actually “Own the system.”

This PERFECTLY agrees with the announcement made that says Sony currently has 2.8 Million subscribers to the Playstation Network, which represents "Over 50% of current Playstation 3 owners."

If you want 100% Accurate CONFIRMATION of this, consider the fact that Sony had set a goal of "Selling" (e.g. Producing) 6 Million Playstation 3 systems by spring of 2007. However, Sony was actually only able to "Sell" (e.g. Produce) 5.5 Million systems, and of those 5.5 Million systems Sony was only able to "Sell" less than 3 Million Playstation 3 systems to Consumers who are classified as "Playstation 3 Owners."

Bottom Line: There are only approximately 6 Million Consumers who are "Playstation 3 Owners." There are over 18 Million Consumers who are "Xbox 360 Owners," and there are over 20 Million Consumers who are "Wii Owners."

Ok, guys. Just to clear up all the FUD that's going around. Like I said in the very first response, these are AMERICAN psn numbers only. so, 2.8 million psn accounts = roughly 5.6 PS3 consoles in America. (Give or take, because, like Pimpy said, you can create multiple accounts)

So, the HUGE disparity that Krogass is going on about is not really there.

Here's the link:

Read 6 lines down, clearly states

"According to Sony's Chris Eden, there are currently 2.8 million registered PSN users in the US "

Unlike the XBOX... you don't need a PSN account to go online or download with the PS3. All the media bar NETWORK options are available with only a system profile. No PSN account needed in order to use the built-in Internet Browser, Information Board, etc...

Actually, those that own a PS3 should know that you don't need a PSN account to go online with the PS3. It has full internet access... a concept still foreign to XBOX360 owners which only have differing levels of access to XBL store based on whether they paid for a subscription or not.

I knew "Krogan" AKA "Xbot" Couldn't resist a long response to calm his insecurities.
Written by jb33 on 2008/03/12

WithoutPrejudiceGamer.... I own a PS3 and there is virtually nothing on the PSN store to download compared to XBL. Sony had to do something to combat XBL so they made their online free and that goes to show what you get for free in life ...NOTHING.....LOL.

XBL actually has "Games" and "DLC" with "Achievements" and a actual online community with "Movies" and "IM" ..... A concept still foreign to the PS3... Please don't anyone mention "Bluray Movies" and the "Internet Browser" either... These are game machines not movie players and desktop computers.

Buy a PS3. It won't hurt you. But it will educate you, Professor.

Over 50% of enlightened PS3 owners go online. ie: They have full internet access... web... email... everything!!!

XBOX360 users are like those people in the old days who are were stuck on AOL without access to the world wide web. Not knowing what they were missing while trapped in a closed and tightly controlled system. At the mercy of buying and seeing only what Microsoft chooses to feed you and having to pay a premium to just to be there. It's called LAME!!! :(

PS3 users have the choice for a free PSN account should they choose to purchase something from the PSN store or use their chat services... and/or they can browse on over to Amazon, eBay, anywhere, or even the forbidden "XBOX.com". It's called FREEDOM!!! :)

In the "Gaming World"...Game software talks and M$ is doing a whole lot of talking while Sony is just listening. Thats just the facts....Deal with em.
Written by Cryos on 2008/03/12

If you two would like to debate about the benefits/differences with PSN and Live, do it in the forums, if not keep on subject.

Again, The numbers presented here are AMERICAN psn accounts. Which means roughly 5.6 million consoles in US, not worldwide. a lot of 360 owners forget there is the rest of the world out there that counts. But I guess that makes sense seeing as how MS's business is 90% American
Written by WithoutPrejudiceGamer on 2008/03/12

Actually, the article does not mention that it is only U.S. PSN accounts.

90% of MS's games business is in the U.S. But over 60% of their corporate profits come from overseas. They have a long way to go in the games industry to be on par with the rest of their business.

I'll post it AGAIN for you....

Cryos: My bad I stand corrected. Whether or not I believe Sony's numbers to be true I do apologize for not reading the article more carefully. So these are US numbers. Cool. I retract my earlier staement.

WithoutPrejudiceGamer: Your right you dont need a PSN account to use the browser. Yawn. Have you used PS3's browser. It blows a$$. I would rather use any version of IE than that. But again I stand corrected.

Cryos: You called me Pimpy. Any relation to BlackTiger????? Oh and please show me proof that the PS3 has sold 5.6 million consoles in the US. Last time I checked they had just sold over 4 million in the US.

hxxp://www.vgchartz.com/

NPD numbers show even worse sales statistics for the PS3 in the US.

Bottom line is just because there are 2.8 million supposed PSN accounts here int he US does not mean that 2.8 million different PS3's are using PSN in the US. Just like I dont ever believe Xbox Live numbers.
Written by WithoutPrejudiceGamer on 2008/03/12

Cryos, In your link they quote the original article as their source. The U.S. distinction is not in the original article. The original article goes on to discuss differences between U.S. and U.K. download habits, but there never is a division of total PSN accounts.

The second article is either a misquote or Kroganesque spin.

I'm happy to be corrected if there is more credible info available.
Written by Cryos on 2008/03/12

Sorry Pimp, just saw the nickname used before. Prolly by BlackTiger, not offense to it.

I was just doubling the number of the PSN accounts. But as you said, you can make multiple PSN accounts for one machine. Heck even Japan and Europe can make a US psn account. So the 50% is not dead on balls accurate.

I was just correcting those accusing Sony of Fudging their numbers of TOTAL consoles sold, which is different then this obviously (Technically, you don't even NEED a PS3 to have a PSN account.)

and you are Absolutely correct, the browser blows. Although it is fun to pull up youtube videos at parties and watch them on the 46" HD tv (quality still sucks though, lol) and they NEED to allow you to add/update drivers and such. I HATE that I can't view newer flash movies, or whatever it is that google video uses.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/03/12

Cryos: Exactly. My wife and I tried to go to Yahoo Music to watch a video. Click on the link for the video and NOTHING. Pissed me off. Plus the browser was slow.

Honestly it was one of the reasons my wife got the PS3. Because of Blu-Ray, web browser, and games. We werent sure about Blu-Ray winning the format war, and the web browser sucked ass. So I ended up trading it in for a 360.

I hope Sony does update the browser regularly. Otherwise I will have to buy my wife a notebook computer for the living room. She really wants to be able to surf the net from the couch. If PS3 gets it's act together, I could see a bluetooth KB/Mouse/PS3 in out future again...
Written by sicbud on 2008/03/12

I'm not even going to read krogan's post as I know it's filled with the same old "I love sucking MS's cock, PS3 sucks, blah blah blah"

These are great numbers, and they are only going to get bigger once HOME is released. The PSN is awesome, playing games with all my friends without having some sort of membership they have to pay for is nice.

Although, Xbox live is well worth the money, but all my friends have ps3's not xbox live.

Can't wait for resistance 2! Going to be such a blast online!
Written by dudeman on 2008/03/12

Its funny how krogan has the sales definitions completely backwards. MS counts sales as 'shipped to retailers', not sony.

I guess as long as you preface your lies with the word 'FACTS' it's ok :)
Written by SupremeChaotic on 2008/03/12

I own a PS3. Know what I use it for? Movies. That's it. The PSN Store blows chunks, the browser is absolutely horrible (give me IE or Opera any day over that garbage), and the inability to provide ALL of the content they said they were going to from the start has really turned me off from the system.

I'm capable of browsing the internet on a 52" widescreen television. I even play WoW on it! I have my PC directly connected to it, so it's pretty nice that I can use it instead of this nearly worthless $600 BD Player.
Written by dudeman on 2008/03/12

Looks like i called this article correctly from the get go.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/03/12

dudeman: Sorry dude. Sony ruined it's reputation with a past history of false sales figures, CGI demo's that were supposedly running on hardware in real time, BS claims about the consoles performance since the PS1, launch delays, etc...

Not saying Microsoft is a perfect Angel with it's RROD, although I havent got the RROD. Or last year when Microsoft pulled a Sony and claimed it had sold 10.4 million consoles by the end of 2006. Yet forgot to let us know that was to retailers and not consumers.

I mean do you really trust either companies numbers?????
Written by blacktiger on 2008/03/12

here comes krogan and pimpy fighting !
