The Nintendo DS still hangs on to the top spot in the hardware sales charts in Japan. For the week ending August 31, 2008, the Media Create numbers show the DS sold 56,439 units as compared to the PSP's 41,664 units. The DS is just a license to print money for Nintendo.

It amazes me how many DSs and PSPs continue to sell in Japan. I guess it has to do with the limited space and/or the amount of time that they spend commuting to/from school or work. Or maybe they're just that much more into video games than the rest of the world that they love the idea of being able to play a game any time, any place. Whatever the reason, kudos to Nintendo and Sony for figuring it out (or just getting lucky).

Well i dont think Nintendo's success has much to do with luck given their track record in the handheld market. Sony have been up and down with the psp but overall its sold well. Unique software is what seems to drive sales in this area.

Actually tr1p1ea, I think it is luck, because for the first couple of months they actually failed and they actually even mention that this hardware was actually third pillar and not continuation of Gameboy because they were scared, taht it might ruin gameboy's brand name,

Even IGN made a post that Nintendo didn't expect this at all, that's why they called it third pillar but now that is selling out insane, NEVERMIND THE THIRD PILLAR !

lol !!!

Nintendo has a good record of history but you know what, after wii, I am curious, what's their new plan is because, I think either 2009 or new console could be their threat...

MY OPINION THOUGH

how on earth can a company that gets it right with every handheld they have released be called lucky?

and, i like IGN, a lot, but i have seen them do things i really wouldnt side with, regardless of console, it just means that they are mere mortals, why anyone would equate them to gods is still beyond me.

get off that Sony colaid, and start posting stuff that will better this place, its not arrogance, just advice

I wonder when MS is gonna go after the portable gaming market. And no, Zune is not their answer. I'm guessing they looked at how tough a time Sony had in the beginning and are thinking it's going to be 10x harder for a 3rd player in this space. But then along comes Apple with the iPhone/iPod touch, and now MS would now be the 4th player not the 3rd. Is this market big enough to support a 4th player? If they're going to do it, timing will be crucial, and they have to do their homework.
