If you have applied for PSN HOME Beta but did not receive an invite, check again today. The HOME beta test has been extended and thousands of new emails went out, according to the Sony blog. The test is going well, it seems, and as we have checked out HOME ourselves, we can certainly say it has an appeal for those who enjoy the virtual online thing.

Update: This is tagged Sept 19, why Sony sent us the email today, we are not sure.

Sony and developer David Jaffe, the people behind the hit franchise God of War, are being sued for copying other's ideas to make the game, it seems. Two claimants allege that they sent in ideas, including a screenplay, to Sony pictures back in 2002, and that the ideas are strikingly similar to what showed up in God of War. Mind you, GoW1 was released in 2005, and it took 3 years to develop. Coincidence? You decide.

Yesterday, Sony mistakenly posted the Life With Playstation application in the PSN store for a few minutes, and a select few users grabbed it. Sony then took it down and told us it would be "coming some time." Well, folks, today is that time! The Life With Playstation app is basically a news, information, and general world happening reporting service, for those who want to use their PS3 OS for such things. Click read more for the full info.

There is an optional PS3 firmware update for those users outside of Japan who wish to grab it. It does not update anything if you are not a Japanese gamer, apparently, and it is not required for download. If you like though, Sony says you can go to System Update and update. Just FYI for those who were asking.

In the first part of an interview today, Microsoft's Phil Spencer spoke with GamesIndustry and declared that MS Game Studios, the division Spencer heads, can produce titles that better anything Sony puts out first party. This is despite recently closing internal studios like Ensemble and FASA, barely waiting until their games are completed before dropping the hammer. Granted, the Xbox360 lineup for this Holiday Season is looking great, but Sony is stepping it up as well, do not forget.

"Let's start from the beginning of both consoles - PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 - which first party has had more success on their own platform? We have Gears, Halo, Forza, we're continuing to push existing IP while bringing new IP to market. I'll line up against Sony's first party any day,"

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida says he is disappointed with the third party support for the Sony PSP. The first party lineup is strong, as per usual with the Sony consoles, but he is very concerned about the opportunities that third parties are missing on the handheld. Despite this though, Yoshida promises many more games for the Sony PSP in the near future. Good to hear.

The CEO of Wild Tangent claims that both Sony and MS will continue to close internal studios as the companies both strive to turn a profit. Speaking with GI, St. John said that MS themselves were "ramping down" the XBox360 investments, to enter what he called a "recovery phase." Our guess is it also has something to do with the next Xbox hardware in development, but that is just speculation from us at this point.

"You will clearly see Sony and Microsoft ramping down their investment in those platforms... What's interesting to note is that Microsoft [Game] Studios: the number of titles they're producing is in decline. So they're investing a lot less in the Xbox, and Sony is doing the same, because they're in a cost recovery phase," he said.

The Nintendo DS still hangs on to the top spot in the hardware sales charts in Japan. For the week ending August 31, 2008, the Media Create numbers show the DS sold 56,439 units as compared to the PSP's 41,664 units. The DS is just a license to print money for Nintendo.

Julie Han of Sony's Corporate Communications Division told Gamasutra that while MS will see a lift in sales due to the Xbox360 price cuts, Sony is unconcerned because it is not sustainable in the long term. She maintains that consumers will realize that even though the PS3 is more expensive, it offers a much better value in the long view.

"We'll obviously see the natural lift [in sales] with the price cut -- but how sustainable is that in the long term? We're really confident that consumers are making choices driven by value," she says, "and we know PS3 offers that value across the board, with the built-in Blu-ray player the broadest and deepest software lineup in the industry, with LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Motorstorm [Pacific Rift]... we're quite confident our holiday sales will be good."

Last week we told you that the new Sony PSP 3000 model, due out in a month or so, would have a new, brighter, easier to use outdoors, LCD screen. We also told you that Sony said the battery life would be cut by around 15% because of this. Well, apparently, that was an erroneous statement. Today, SCEA Marketing Exec John Koller said that the new PSP 3000 would have the same battery life as the PSP Slim.

"I'd like to make a correction and clarify that the new PSP will have equivalent battery life to the current PSP, about 4 to 6 hours for games and about 4 to 5 hours for UMD videos," said Koller on the official PS blog.

Our PSPs only get about 3 hours of straight gaming, but then again, we don't wear watches either.
