Acti-Blizz CEO Robert Kotick has responded to Warner Bros. for saying it should receive higher royalties for use of its songs in games like Guitar Hero. Kotick maintains that companies like Warner Bros. are failing to acknowledge the benefits they receive from the exposure and re-exposure of songs from their music catalog to the gaming public. It brings the songs to an audience that may never have listened in the first place. We tend to agree.

"I think his view was...that [Warner Music] should be compensated the way they might for a performance on iTunes. But this is an entirely different business that is very technically complex. We're going to favour those publishers that recognise and appreciate how much we can add value to their artists," said Kotick.

Another shot has been fired in the Blu-Ray / HD-DVD war. Warner Brothers has decided to go exclusively Blu-Ray. They will phase out HD-DVD production in by May. In Europe and the US, reports say that Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD by a substantial margin, although Paramount and DreamWorks are still HD-DVD exclusive.

"The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger," said Warner chairman and CEO Barry Meyer. "We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers."
