Crackdown

Labeled With  crackdown xbox360 real time worlds
Written by DM on Sunday, March 04 2007

Crackdown is one of the most hyped co-op Xbox Live experiences to date, and rightfully so (the hype at least). The game was conceived and partially designed by the man behind the Grand Theft Auto series, and fans of the GTA series will certainly notice the influence here and there. The game does have a highly stylized look, with its cel-shaded art, but some have complained that this detracts from the realism of the game. All things considered, the question is, do all these things add up to a quality title? Let’s find out.

In crackdown, you play an “agent,” a member of “the agency” (duh), which is a law enforcement body created from the combined policing agencies of the world. This new law enforcement body was created in response to a growing organized crime problem the world over. The gangs and illicit corporations have grown so powerful that regular police organizations no longer are able to control the cities and towns. So, the Agency was created, with regular officers now called “Peacekeepers.” On top of that, the “Agents,” of which you are one, are a new breed of human -- genetically engineered and enhanced to jump higher, live longer, fire weapons more accurately, and generally be more robust in order to single handedly fight the criminal scum of the world. You play one of the first of these “agents” to hit the street, and of course, you perform extremely well.

The world that Crackdown is set in is astoundingly large. There are three main areas of the city, and each area is controlled by a different organized crime operation. Los Muertos, a latin-heritage gang, The Volk, an Eastern-European group of thugs, and The Shai-Gen Corporation, an Evil Japanese Conglomerate, are the three representative criminal bodies in Pacific City. As I said, the city itself is exceptionally large, even by vehicle it would take around 15 minutes to navigate from one side of the map to the other. The city is also populated by a number of autonomous citizens, all powered by the game’s impressive AI. They all move on their own and run away fast from the first sign of trouble.

Since the game was created by the man behind GTA, of course, there is a car-jacking feature built in standard. As an agent, you will grab any vehicle available to help ferry you to your next point of interest or crime boss hideout. You will find yourself driving around the different parts of the city many times over in order to trigger a game cinema which helps reveal the hideout of certain prominent members of the gang you are currently hunting down. In fact, this is one of the few tedious parts of the game. If you really have trouble, there are websites that have pre-marked maps of the boss areas, but you should not need these.
