You cannot discuss graphical tweaks without also discussing physics, of course. Physics affect everything in a video game from the dust of an explosion to the way your comrades fall on the ground when shot. The original Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter was praised as one of the best representations of real world physics in a video game. This was, in part, due to the fact that the game used AGEIA’s PhysX system. AGEIA’s PhysX is a programming device used by developers to accelerate the physics of a game in order to make them much closer to real world conditions. On the PC, gamers can even buy a separate PPU (physics processing unit) to help facilitate the complex computations that the AGEIA system requires. Well, in GRAW 2, Ubisoft uses the PhysX system once again, and this time you can tell that the boys over at Ubisoft have had time to learn the ins and outs of the PhysX add-on. As I mentioned previously, the explosions in GRAW 2 are fantastic. This is not just because they look great, mind you, it is because they “act” great as well. When objects explode, the PhysX engine kicks in and the smoke and fire, along with the debris, spread in a realistic fashion. It almost seems as if every single particle of dust is treated as a separate entity and has its path and reaction rendered individually. Of course, this would take more processing power than a mere console can provide, but that is the beauty of the PhysX engine.

Physics is not only for explosions though; it also determines the reaction when you or your teammates get shot. At night, you will see tracer bullets whizzing past you and if they hit a wall of cement they will shatter and bounce off, but if they hit a thin aluminum wall they will splinter and some will break through. It is small touches like this that make GRAW 2 that much better than the original game. If you want to know just what it is like to be in the heat of a firefight in real life, this is about as close as you will safely be able to get in the comfort of your own home. One of the things I want to mention here is that while you may not see much of an improvement in single player campaign mode, the engine has been tweaked a ton in co-op and multiplayer mode. This is where you will notice the most difference as the developers have really made an attempt to make the multiplayer mode look as close to the single player mode as possible.




The sound and voice over acting in GRAW 2 is on par with that of the original game. The effects are excellent and deep, even the tinkering and clacking of your equipment when you walk or run is noticeable and accurate. The pings and pangs of sniper bullets whizzing around you and hitting whatever cover you are behind are accurate as well, and even better with a surround sound system. The weapon and vehicle sounds are just as good as the original GRAW as well, there is not much more to say about the effects.

The voice-overs, on the other hand, have been cranked up a notch in the “military lingo” department, if you can believe it. Ubisoft has actually found a way to insert even more military-only terminology into the dialogue of the soldiers in the game. It even goes so far as to include a few choice names for the Mexicans which are pretty “colorful” to put it nicely. Even so, it is nice to see a developer who is not afraid of the PC (that’s politically correct) crowd in the face of greater game realism. I my opinion though, even if it is a bit over the top, it really does help to draw you into the game. This, along with the music that kicks in when you are entering a particularly dramatic action scene, makes for some great gaming. And yes, the music is the same tracks as the original game, but that is fine with me.

There are other non-game engine additions to the game as well. First of all, there are new weapons in every category. The old ordnance are all still there, but there are new, high tech weapons in every category. On top of that, there are Grenadier versions of almost every rifle, complete with under-barrel grenade launchers. The ability to wield your favorite machine gun, complete with 2, 3, or 4 times optics and a suppressor, as well as a grenade launcher to boot, makes for one serious piece of firepower to contend with. On top of this, there are many new outfits, masks, headgear options, and face patterns to select from, but this is mainly something that you will use for multiplayer mode only.
