For many years, Xbox users have been clamoring for a sequel to certain games. Crimson Skies leaps to mind, as well as MechAssault (MechAssault 2 was not considered a true sequel by most fans of the game) and Jet Set Radio. Believe it or not, one of the underground hits from the Xbox 1 days was Fuzion Frenzy, and gamers have been asking for a sequel ever since. Well, gamers got their wish. Unfortunately, this wish has a dark side, the game itself has more than a few drawbacks. Let’s find out if they are able to be overlooked in the face of a much-wanted sequel.

In case you are not familiar with the franchise, the Fuzion Frenzy series fills the “party game” void that seems to plague consoles that are not made by Nintendo. The original game was made to compete directly with Mario Party, but it never really approached the Nintendo game sales wise. That doesn’t mean the game was bad, it actually was a very functional game which provided hours of fun with four players. Unfortunately, if memory serves, the game was released before Xbox Live was available, so there was no online mode to speak of. The sequel gets the actual mini-game part of the game play right, but the filler that comes in-between took a wrong turn somewhere.

Even though the original game was developed by Blitz Games, this game is developed by one of the gaming industry’s puzzle and party game veterans, Hudsonsoft. Hudson’s influence and game style is evident in FF2 from the moment you boot up the game. Form the colorful graphics and light frothy sound effects to the well designed yet light hearted characters and Japanese influenced animation sequences, the game has Hudson’s stamp on it for sure.

The game is centered around a fictional four-player competition that takes place far in the future. Players must compete in min-games to win control of different planets, and the player who controls enough planets to win the entire solar system is declared the overall winner. You can choose one of eight avatars to represent you, and each have different attributes but to be honest, the avatar stats make little difference. Once you have selected your avatar and taken care of a few other pre-game choices, you are ready to go.
