The Evoluent Vertical Mouse 3 is one of the more odd-looking professional input devices. It actually looks like a PC mouse got knocked on its side, and no one bothered to put it right again. I assure you, this is done on purpose, and it is all done in the name of ergonomics. According to the people at Evoluent, the Vertical Mouse 3 allows users to move the mouse while still holding their arm in the “at rest” position. This “sideways” arm angle is supposedly much closer to the natural position that the human arm assumes when it is at rest. Evoluent claims that this leads to much less mousing related afflictions, from carpal tunnel to tennis elbow. This may be true, but the Evoluent VM3 also has features that make it a worthy stand-alone mouse even if it wasn’t resting on its side. Let’s find out why.

Many PC gamers suffer from a variety of hand and forearm ailments due to the prolonged and sustained mouse use that professional PC gaming requires. Tournaments and online game play sessions can last anywhere from 8 to 24 hours, and this puts quite a strain on wrists, forearms, and even elbows. The Evoluent Vertical mouse 3 aims to alleviate these health issues by providing a grip orientation which “forces” the arm into its natural rest position. I used this mouse for about eight hours straight during a marathon gaming session to prepare for this review and I must say; I did not experience even one instance of discomfort or pain. That fact alone leads me to believe that the Vertical Mouse 3 delivers on what it promises. If that is not enough for you though, it is also bolstered by the fact that the Evoluent website is virtually filled with e-mails, letters, and testimonials from users who had their discomfort clear up just by using the device. This thing really does make a difference in the ergonomics department.

While the ergonomics are a great plus, any mouse worth its salt still needs a solid hardware base. A company could build the most comfortable handheld mouse in the history of the world, but if the technology and hardware don’t hold up, it will end up in the bargain bin. I am happy to report that the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 3 has the hardware where it counts, for the most part.

The installation and setup of the Vertical Mouse 3 was as straightforward as it gets. The mouse is USB driven, and you do not even have to install the drivers if you do not wish to. I recommend you install the drivers, though, as they provide options that are specific to the Vertical Mouse that you will not be able to access without the included software. In fact, Evoluent provides many driver software features that I have never seen before, and really caught my eye. The Vertical Mouse 3 software is one of the most innovative diver packages I have seen.
