The single player mode/story mode is fantastic. Now I would be remiss if I did not tell you I was a huge sci-fi fan, and I have read many of Orson Scott Card's books. The game is in 3rd person perspective with an almost anime style feel. It reminded me of Aeon Flux, don't ask me why. You might liken the combat style of this game to that of Gungrave on the PS2. Along with the weapons, which are fun to fire, you have super human powers. The main character has a melee attack, a powerful jump, and a controlled dodge move. By hitting the D-pad, you are able to access a menu that assigns the other super power feats to either trigger in place of a weapon. The super powers consist of things like slow time (bullet time), and telekinesis (force grab/throw). The game also includes the option to play in first-person mode. This will be appreciated by FPS addicts but it visually detracts from the high flying abilities of the protagonist. Besides, the targeting system has been specifically designed for a third-person action approach and better suits the gameplay style. Another of Advent Rising is leveling up the main character's abilities. By simply using a weapon or power it becomes stronger. Some of the super powers start off very weak, but once you power them up they can be devastating. The same can be said for the melee and dodge attacks. What starts as a single punch attack can be leveled up to a combination of kicks and punches that when combined with a power like slowing down time, can be very effective. By the end of the game the main character learns six evolutionary powers and four types of melee attacks. If you are a sci fi fan, an Orson Scott Card fan, or a great 3rd person shooter fan (or first person), then this game is for you. This game, even though it has an Xbox Live mode which is more or less useless, is really meant for single player mode. The story is the most important thing here. |
