As I mentioned above, there are accessories for weapons, and “perks.” The weapon accessories are things like special scopes, silencers, and other tradition add-ons. The red dot scopes that can be unlocked when challenges are completed are very useful in-game, and do give you a bit of an advantage. What will really give you that battle-edge though, is your perks. You can think of perks as special abilities that, when added to one of three perk slots, give your character abilities that otherwise would be impossible to attain without selecting a different weapon or load out. The perks that we are aware of at rank 11 are:

C4 x 2 – remote C4 detonator and explosives, RPG-7 x2 – rocket launcher with 2 rockets, stopping power - increases bullet damage, Juggernaut – increases health, UAV jammer – makes your undetectable when the enemy activates his UAV radar, sonic boom – increases explosive damage, extreme conditioning – gives player the ability to sprint for longer distances, steady aim – increases hip fire accuracy, deep impact – increases bullet penetration, last stand – gives players the ability to pull out their pistol when they are shot and fire several rounds before they die.

There are also a few others listed which unlock at level 21, such as martyrdom and sleight of hand, but their descriptions only say unlocked at Master Sergeant (lv 21).

The two perks listed above that really help illustrate just how innovative Infinity is trying to make CoD4, are last stand and deep impact. Last stand allows you to fire your pistol from the prone position when an enemy kills you. Before you bleed out and die, you can probably get off 2 or 3 while clips. If you manage to kill anyone while in last stand mode, you even get double points for the kill. In fact, more than once I was able to kill enough in a row to call in a UAV while bleeding out. If that doesn’t illustrate some of the neat-o features of the game, I don’t know what will. Yes, I know I just said neat-o. The second perk, called deep impact, sounds like it is run of the mill, but here is why it isn’t. If you equip a lighter gun, such as the MP5, which is a sub machine gun, the bullets do not really have too much stopping power. This means that while the gun is useful in closer quarters and has a high rate of fire, the enemy can take a few more hits before he starts to feel it. Well, with the deep impact perk equipped, a lighter gun like the MP5 becomes as hard hitting as a full-on assault rifle, and you keep the high rate of fire and accuracy. In short, the MP5 becomes a very scary and powerful weapon, and the entire dynamic of the gamers’ character was changed by adding one perk over another. The gun can now even shoot through thin walls! This ability to affect the entire class design with one powerup is the main reason that CoD4 is set to stand out like a beacon. The game, like I said, is going to provide so many combinations of weapons, perks, powerups, and the like, that each gamer will be able to design his or her online character as they see fit.

The Barracks also contain the part of the online mode that will take the longest to complete – the Challenges. These Challenges are laid out by sections, one for each weapon class, as well as Boot Camp, Operations, and three classified sections. Inside the sections are anywhere from 10 to 30 tasks that must be completed while playing in matches on Xbox Live. The easiest way to think of Challenges is that they are basically the same as Xbox Live Achievements but the rewards are game items instead of MS points. For instance, under the SMG heading, there is a challenge for the MP5 weapon. When you get 25 kills using the MP5, you unlock the ability to equip a Red Dot scope. When you go on to get 75 kills using the MP5, you get the ability to add a silencer to the weapon. There is even a reqard for getting 100 kills using the MP5, but I have not gotten that far yet. Keep in mind that this is only 1 section of 30 challenges, which fall under just 1 of 10 main Challenge headings. If I had to estimate using all I can see in the beta, there is something like over 2000 Challenges to complete for game items. The challenges are not all as simple as the MP5 challenge I described above, either. Under the Sniper heading, there is a challenge to get 100 head shots using the worst Sniper Rifle in the game. It is going to take even the most experienced online gamer months to complete the Challenges, but the rewards are well worth it. A scope and a silencer on a weapon gives you a huge advantage over other players. Unfair? May be, but you put in hours to earn it, so too bad.

As I said, the actual, basic, gameplay in Call of Duty 4 online is nothing revolutionary. It is the class and rank system that makes CoD4 the game that it is. Infinity Ward has obviously put in many hours just sitting and designing the items and unlockables that will be included in the online mode. All this, and they were able to keep the actual gameplay fun and fast, without making it so that gamers are constantly thinking about if they chose the right perk or powerup, or what unlockable to go for next. No, it is not the great CoD4 match play that makes this game revolutionary, it is the extensive ranking and powerup system, as well as the many class design features, that is going to put the game at the head of the pack of online modern warfare titles for a long time to come.
