Stuntman: Ignition

The repetition in Stuntman can also be a source of enjoyment. Once you know what a scene is all about, and you can grasp the crux of the scene you are shooting, it will show. Trying to position yourself to get the maximum points for a trick and end up on the exact trajectory needed to ace the next rick is challenging, and fun for some, such as myself. I remember it took me upwards of 20 tries on the latest Splinter Cell game in order to complete the level without even getting spotted by a merc, but I was rewarded with top marks at the end score tally screen. If this appeals to you, then this game is a must have.

One of the other issues with the game is the steepness learning curve. It will take you at least 3-4 movie shoots completed until you can not only understand what each glowing icon means in a shoot, but perform the trick with any kind of regularity. In fact, you will not even unlock all the tricks until movie shoot 4. You will even find, at times, that the “perform stunt here” icons turn from green, to yellow, to red, which means don’t bother doing this trick, before you are even able to get to the trick launching location. Totally perplexing, to put it lightly.

The basics are all there in Stuntman: Ignition though, thankfully. I am talking graphics and sound here. The graphics keep a nice steady frame rate, and while they are not top quality, they are certainly more than adequate for a game of this nature. The sound is also well done, and each movie shoot comes with its own set of voice-over acting. Movie one has one of those ornery, stuck-up, British directors at the head of the movie. Ho hum is one of his favorite attitudes, and even if you ace a scene, he will be damned if he shows any emotion. One of the later movies has a bunch of whopping white trash guys on the director’s bullhorn, and them all makes sure y’all have a hootenanny of a time! It all comes off without a hitch as well, kudos THQ!

Of course, any driving game would be DOA if the driving mechanics were not all there. I am happy to report that the Stuntman: Ignition driving game play is not only present, but it is tweaked to completely play right into the game’s tasks. It is always a great thing to see when developers really take the time to make the game play of a title fit with the objectives, and Stuntman does this very successfully. These cars will never be able to hop on the street and race with the mechanics of this game in place, but who needs them to? We would have liked to see much more interesting crash sequences, a la Burnout, but what is here is more than adequate, besides, there is always Stuntman 3, which is on the way I am sure.
