I, instead, will tell you about one of the best features in Lair – the fire breathing lock on and game shooting mechanics. When you are flying through the air, the mission may require you to destroy land-based catapults or other grand units. You would think this would be an impossible task with the control scheme problems, but it is not at all. In fact, the fireballs you shoot lock on to targets without you even having to designate what you are firing at. It is a great touch by Factor 5, and without it, the game would have been tenfold more difficult. Add to this the ability to fire as many fireballs as you like, and you can finish most missions with ease. Now, the camera, that is another story entirely. When you get near obstacles, the camera can be, and many times is, a problem. Of course, when you are flying free, it is not a big deal, and most times, thankfully, you are flying free. As for other modes besides the single player adventure, well, there are none. While the game might have benefitted from an online battle arena type mode, I cannot say that it would have not been a total disaster, either. I still think it would have been worth a try, though. Lair is a game which has received much bad press. In my opinion this is because the game promised so much and delivered so little, that reviewers were, rightfully, upset, and felt cheated. I do believe it is our job though, as reviewers, to take the game that was actually provided and review it as a separate entity, and judge it on the merits that it provides. To that end, Lair is distinctly average. There are parts that are very bad, for sure, but there are parts that are great fun, as well. The game deserves a rent for those who wish to spend a few days with the SixAxis and a fire breathing dragon. Those who do not wish to will not miss much, but the game is not entirely worthless as some would have you believe. Lair is a fun, motion-controlled, dragon-riding adventure, which can be fantastic at times. It is just the other times that happen to drag it down. |
