The nodes play mode is where Warhawk really comes to life. In Nodes play, the entire goal is to capture the enemy basis and remain there in order to build your troop presence and power. The more power and presence you have, the larger your turf grows. This, in turn, generated points for your team – points which you need to win the match. If you manage to link together two or more nodes, you gain bonus points and even more turf, which makes it much harder for the enemy to claw their way back for the win.

Gaining turf and power also has benefits in terms of equipment and weapons. As you gain more territory and power, the weapons and vehicles you have access to will increase. This makes it ever harder for the enemy to gain back the upper hand once you have ceded enough of the map. Basically, once you control, let us say, 65-70% of a map, you are more or less guaranteed a win unless you severely mis-manage your resources.

Keep in mind, Sony is not going to make it a total cakewalk to win. There are points on the map that may be important to control but do not count as turf building points. These are mini-checkpoints which are used for team spawn points and other minor purposes. These nodes add to the overall team winning potential, but as I said, they are not points which add to your turf. Then again, if you have a choice to spawn at the front line, or spawn 2 minutes worth of walking from the front line, that could be the difference between a win and a loss. It certainly adds another element of depth to the game.

Warhawk’s vehicles and other controllable machines offer players a plethora of ways to eliminate their opponents. A total of nine ground weapon options and seven airborne weapon options (by my count), along with three vehicles and three turret types, give players an almost endless amount of combinations to defend or attack the opposing force. This is one instance where the developer actually took notes during the beta test, and balanced the weapons as best as they could, and in turn, there are literally dozens of different tactics and strategies available to help win matches. The game is one of the most balanced video games I have seen in a long time, which is a good thing folks. No more players grabbing the one uber-vehicle and winning every round by double the points of the next player. Nearly every weapon or vehicle has at least one counter-measure made specifically to neutralize that specific threat. This extends to ground troop weapons and turrets, Incognito really considered everything. What this leads to is team play that is heavy on strategy, and light on bullet spam – something many of us crave when we play games online. How much skill does it take to see who can press the trigger faster? Not much, but to develop and execute a winning strategy, now that takes some brain power.

At the end of every match you will be evaluated and awarded with rank points and the viewing of your stats for the game. If you are playing in ranked mode, the points will be added to your online rank points, and if warranted, you will be promoted. You can also receive medals and ribbons for certain actions such as killing an enemy in a specific way or with a specific weapon. There are more than twenty ranks that players can attain, from recruit to General. The ranks in the beginning progress fairly quickly, as in any game, but once you pass the point where simply killing enemies award you points, things get much slower.
