NHL 2K8

As I said when we started, the 2K Sports offering is usually the better looking of the two each year, graphics wise. They do not disappoint this time around. The ice and rink are gorgeous, as usual, and what struck me more than anything in 2K8, is the fluidity of the checks and rink boards when hit. If you are able to chuck a player into the boards hard enough, you will literally see a wave-like ripple radiate out from the point of impact. It looks so real that I spent an entire half of one game trying to send the other team to the hospital with into-the-boards body checks. Try it, and you will see, the animations have been tweaked and the game looks great. Not to mention sounds great, but that is something that goes without saying at this point as there is only so much developers can do with sound effects before they are perfected, and both EA and 2K has them pretty much down pat.

Of course, the game is not without its drawbacks. The menu system is, as always, a bit clunky and hard to navigate. There are just so many options to go through and consider, by the time you find what you are looking for, there is a good chance you may not remember what you wanted to set it to! No joke here, folks. Another gripe I have is that the on-screen menu items and messages sometimes appear right over the on-ice action, including active face-offs! You would think that 2K could add an extra 5 lines of code in order to make sure that I can see the puck and not have to wait until my line change stamina bars disappear.

The online Xbox Live mode in NHL 2K8 is just about identical to last year’s versions. The leagues, different skill level lobbies, and community features are all in-tact, and it is actually a great way to get into an online sporting community if you have never done so. There are many friendly players who will be happy to play a game or two with you while giving your pointers on the basics of the game. There was no lag or other technical issues to speak of, so there is no worry there. The online portion of the game was not really touched, and that is good because it was more or less great the way it was set last year.

NHL 2K8 is a 2K game through and through. If I went through all the options and minutae here today, I would be posting 10 pages for you to read. More than likely this is not your first hockey game, and if it is, then I can suggest the game without a doubt. Like I said though, since this is likely not your first hockey game, you know what to expect besides the new feature, the Pro Stick control. And as I said, those of you who want to use it will. NHL 2K8 is my personal choice this year over EA, but not by much. To make things even better, both games have demos available for download on both PS3 and Xbox360, so you can literally try before you buy on both titles. NHL 2K8 looks, feels, and plays great, if you are not a die-hard EA fan, I suggest this one for purchase, no question.
