NBA 2K8

There's definitely the 3pt shootout, pickup games of 15 or 21 between teams, games of 21, and even a dunk learning mode titled Dunk School. The amount of depth here is fantastic.

Pickup games and dunk contests are fun enough, but what about that season mode; they didn't skimp here either. Just a note, NBA2K8 allows you do initiate a season as short as 28 games; the competition's title is locked at 82. Simcentral is the main dashboard for things this year. You'll get treated to division and conference standings, your current streaks, team chemistry, and a quick look at your upcoming and previously played games. Inside the menu you'll have the ability to modify your rotations, situational lineups and current starting minutes allotment.

Since you've been acquainted to the game modes, let’s talk a little about the in-game action. Every game has to load right? At least NBA2K8 has a very small loading time, and within it a small trivia game. Get 20 of these right and you'll pickup an Achievement. Sound this year is top notch this year too. New commentary from Kevin Harlan and Kenny Smith really give the game that NBA on TNT feel without that pesky NBA on TNT license that Sony Computer Entertainment of America has with NBA08. Awkward, I know. If you were a fan of the NBA's "silent" games last year, try it out. Turn the commentary down to 0, turn the crowd noise to 60 and turn the PA and sound effects up to 100. This'll give you that feeling that you're in the game rather than watching it on TV.

I've gotta be honest about one thing this year, the player graphics don't look that much better. However it's obvious that Visual Concepts took the time to make the arenas surroundings more lifelike. The crowds look remarkably better; the fans are now wearing hometown jerseys and varied clothing. The lights no longer reflect in purple banding all over the hardwood as well. Speaking of fixing glitches, I haven't seen messed up shorts in game, with the exception of one time I tried to dunk over a Honda Civic in a dunk contest and got sent hurling into the pavement in a barrel roll after tripping. No seriously.

Defensive AI has been stepped up this year; it's going to be much harder to dominate a game by driving to the hole with the same player every time; even in the default difficulty settings. With that in mind, players that tend to shoot in traffic are going to have a harder time this year scoring; keep an eye out for that wide open wingman, he'll be your key to success. Dribble moves to get open feel a little sluggish, but ultimately could be presented this way to discourage you from acting like its Gameday 98' all over again and L/R'ing your way to paydirt every play. Remember, in order to get a clean look at the basket, you'll probably not want to pull up, fading away, while in mid-crossover.

So, we've got plenty of game play options, Xbox Live integration across the board with non 5v5 games, a cleaner game engine, and a more well rounded experience. 2K has made another winner in my book. Maybe nothing groundbreaking new this year, but ‘if it aint broke, don't fix it.’ From hardcore NBA lifer to casual fan, you'll get plenty of bang for your buck out of this title.
