Now we come to Portal. I did not know what to expect when I started my game of Portal. Frankly, I did not even know it was a puzzle type game. My understanding was that it was a new multiplayer type of game, boy was I wrong. In fact, Portal is one of the most addictive puzzle games that you will ever play in your life. When you begin Portal, you will realize that not only are you playing a puzzle game, but you are playing one of the first games to truly take advantage of 3D space in a puzzle atmosphere. Talk about a brain buster, try wrapping your head around a game where you can fall through the floor and end up falling out of the wall. Yes, you read correctly, and most times that is the exact right move to complete the level. The game provides you with a "Portal Gun" that has the ability to fire red and blue portals. A red portal is the entrance while a blue portal is simply the exit, or vice versa -- whichever strikes your fancy. You must navigate your way through 19 levels as you play the equivalent of a human guinea pig at the Aperture Science Center. Let me give you an example of one of the levels so that you can possibly understand how the game works, although I do not hold out much hope. In one of the levels, there is a room with a box on one side, a half wall in the middle of the room, and a switch that must be weighted with the box on the other side of the half wall. The problem is, of course, how do you get the box onto the weighted switch when the half wall is clearly in the way. You would accomplish this task by firing your portal gun at the half wall thus creating a blue portal. You would then fire a red portal over the half wall and onto the back wall of the side of the room that has the weighted switch. You would then pick up the box and walk through the blue portal you created on the half wall. As soon as you walk through you would then fall out the red portal on the side of the room with the weighted switch, box in hand. You would then proceed to put the box on the weighted switch, which opens the exit door, which you proceed through to the next level. I hope this was clear enough for you to understand how Portal works, because it is a fantastically addictive puzzle game for anyone who enjoys mental stimulation. |
