I do not think it is necessary to rehash the graphics and sound ratings for Portal. They are just as stunning and well thought out as Episode two. In fact, I have to give the developers of portal who designed the maps a serious amount of credit. If you think solving the puzzle levels in Portal is hard, try to imagine designing 19 of the levels from scratch. It would be a living hell considering portals can be fired almost anywhere. The game does not even get difficult in my estimation until around map 14. That is when you will have to start firing portals while you were free falling through the air. Yes, you read correctly, firing portals while you are falling. Keeping you company throughout the game is a disembodied female voice which represents the testing computer. Not only is this "woman" a comic genius, but she seems to have a truly hostile disregard for your well-being. You will likely laugh out loud more than once, especially when she nonchalantly remarks things like "Aperture Science truly values the well-being of their test subjects, so please avoid being hit by the energy beam as it will irrevocably damage your body and we will be unable to continue the test process." She is truly a caring entity. Portal, as I said, is one of, if not the best puzzle game to be released for any system in recent times. I've even talked to players who despise puzzle games, who love Portal. Of course, I never did mention it was technically a puzzle game, but who's counting. Once again, Valve has a winner on their hands, and the best part about it is that soon, at least on the PC, users will be able to upload their own Portal levels. What a fiasco that is going to be, and what fun it is going to be figuring it out. The last game included with The Orange Box is called Team Fortress 2. Those of you who played the original Team Fortress know that it has been 10 years just about, since the original game was released. In that time TFC, as it was called, became one of the most popular Half-life mods ever released. (A half-life mod, for those who do not know, is a set of maps or an entire game, built using the Half life engine editor that was released with the original Half-life game.) Some of these mods are truly impressive, the most well-known of them being a little game called Counterstrike. |
