The Orange Box

Another unique feature of Team Fortress is that it is designed with a uniquely comical graphic style. The game was not designed to look realistic at all, in fact, is closer to a cartoon then it is to real life. The Heavy is twice the size of the Scout, with a bald head and a constant five o'clock shadow. The Medic runs around the map with a long white coat on, and the Spy has a permanent ski mask over his head. All these graphical nuances make for a very quirky yet unique looking game, and it works extremely well with the gameplay mechanics. As I said there are only three basic game types, and death match is not one of them. The game is all about capturing control points -- killing the enemy is only the means to this end.

Unfortunately TF2 is one of the weaker areas of The Orange Box. This is because of two factors. First, the game only includes six maps. When there is only a small amount of game modes, six maps get old fast, there is no debating that. Sadly, the number of maps is not the main problem -- the online lag is. Getting into a TF2 online match is a bit of a chore. It usually takes me three tries to find a match where the lag is tolerable. If any of the players are downloading, or uploading, or in any way otherwise utilizing their Internet bandwidth while playing, the entire match will be affected. Lastly, even though thousands of players are online, sometimes it is near impossible to find a game to join. Why this is I have no idea. This is a shame considering TF2 is among the top five multiplayer experiences on Xbox Live. Of course Valve is going to release a patch that fixes these issues, but how long that is going to take is anyone's guess.

TF2, just like its predecessor, is a fantastically fun and addictive online game. It can be a bit overwhelming at first, but you will actually find it among the simpler games out there once you get the hang of all the nuances. Combine that with the fact that you can play nine different classes, and the replayability of the game literally goes through the roof. Once Valve fixes the online issues, the game will take its rightful place as a top Xbox Live contender.

There really is nothing else out there that can compare to The Orange Box. Of course, Half-life two, and Half-life two Episode one are basically disc filler, but that does not mean that they are not still great titles. It just means that they are a bit old. Fortunately, the other three titles that are included on the disc are top notch titles in and of themselves. Two great single player games and one great multiplayer game alone would normally cost you $150. The Orange Box gives you four great single player games, and one great multiplayer game, for $60. Hours upon hours of good gaming for the price of a cheap date is something we need more of in my book. I can recommend The Orange box to pretty much everyone hands down without a doubt, be it on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, or whatever platform the future may hold in store for that Cruh-azy Orange Box.
