Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction

Insomniac has been working with Sony for years now. They are familiar with the Sony hardware and their first outing on the PlayStation 3, Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, makes this very evident. The RC series has paid Insomniac's bills for the last few years, and has become one of the most adored series in the PS library. This latest adventure is a bit different, and takes itself a bit more seriously, and it looks like that was exactly what the series needed -- it is fantastic.

When I say the game takes itself more seriously though, longtime fans do not need to worry. The game has not lost any of its humor, style, or attitude. The series has just matured -- and I don't mean that Ratchet has grown tremendous muscles and now chases after Lombax women -- I mean the series as a whole has moved forward.

Part of the maturing means that this time around, there are story elements that actually have a deep meaning for the RC universe. Where exactly did Ratchet come from? What happened to the Lombax race? Also, what the heck is happening to Clank?

Without giving away too much of the story, I will try to summarize the storyline. Ratchet, and of course Clank, begin their adventure in the capital city, which has suddenly come under attack by the evil Emperor Tachyon. As this evil villain jaunts around the galaxy attempting to find a hidden Lombax weapon which supposedly has the ability to cement his takeover, Ratchet chases after him faithfully, trying to stop him at every turn. Along the way, Ratchet has many adventures, collects many new weapons, and makes a few new friends -- Clank even manages to end the game on a note that begs for a sequel.
