Soldier Of Fortune: Payback

The first two soldier of Fortune games were mainly for the PC, and they were both fantastic, and rather bloody, shooters. In fact, the first Soldier of Fortune game was one of the first FPS titles to make the shotgun a useful, and fun, weapon to wield. Unfortunately, the original developers (Raven Software) had nothing to do with this game, and it shows. The game is not bad per se, but it is sad that Cauldron, the developer, felt that Payback was worth releasing when a slew of fantastic FPS games were already released or about to be released for the home consoles. I guess that old saying holds true, once you drive up a mountain you don't back down.

In Payback, as you learn on the first mission, you play a mercenary who gets very badly double crossed by his partner. As the story goes on, you will learn, well, actually, that's about as far as the story goes. The premise of the game is only there to give you a slight moral justification for completely and totally decimating every enemy that you meet. This is definitely on the “arcade” side of shooters.

Soldier of Fortune: Payback is certainly fun from time to time. The game definitely has the ability to get you excited a bit, and make your heart rate rise a bit, when the moment strikes you. Much of this excitement comes from the fact that your enemies literally fall to pieces when you shoot them. I do mean pieces -- arms, legs, and heads blow off and explode like high school cherry bombs. In fact, you do not see many FPS games with more gore then SOF, but that has held true since the first game. Real weapon in physics and damage have been tossed out the window, as sometimes you can even have enemies blown across the screen into a building by a rocket launcher that should have blown them to pieces. Of course, it is much more fun to see them fly into a car windshield as a result of the concussion wave.

The game mechanics themselves are pretty standard. The control setup is your standard strafe/free look schemata, with options for left-handers and legacy players. The sensitivity settings that we all come to expect from FPS games are there as well, so no need to worry about that. Buttons for melee attack, duck, zoom, reload, and even sprint are available. There is nothing revolutionary when it comes to control, sorry to say.
