Assassin's Creed is one of those games that has the potential to haunt you long after you finish playing it. The game is so unbelievably organic, that at times, you will truly believe you are the main character. Not only that, but the huge game world is detailed down to the pixel. Many have taken it upon themselves to call the game disappointing, but if you give it a chance, a serious chance, you will find yourself being sucked in to this "Prince of Persia on crack." When you begin the game, you will instantly realize that the game is actually sat in modern times. You are being held captive (although not very securely) by two scientists who are trying to extract information from deep within your mind. In their estimation, the best way to accomplish this is to have you really of one of your ancestor’s lives via a device called the Animus. This is just a fancy name for a virtual reality simulator. The ancestor they have chosen you to play is named Altair (pronounced al-tie-ear), who lived during the time of the Crusades. Altair is a member of a society of assassins, who live by a set of rules called (what else) the Assassin’s Creed. When you start to control your ancestor, you will see that he does not hold the Creed in very high regard. Altair kills innocents, reveals himself unnecessarily, and generally makes a mess of things -- all big no-no's according to the Creed. This earns him a severe punishment from the man in charge, and you must take control of your ancestor and work your way back into the good graces of the Assassin’s Society. That is the story of the game in a nutshell, an old you were going to hear from me for risk of spoilers. As I said, the world of AC is unbelievably real. Everything is lit correctly, with just the right amount of bloom, and almost everything casts a proper shadow. This includes Altair himself, as well as his clothes, which move and flow with a realism rarely seen. Every object is textured to near perfect design, sometimes so well that you will have trouble discerning what can be used as a foothold or handhold and what cannot. The motion capturing and animation is also some of the finest you will see in any video game to date. The word graceful comes to mind, although I must say one of the games few drawbacks is the jerky animation of the AI citizens (more on that later). |
