There is a Challenge mode available in DW6, which was another half addition that gave the game just that much more little bit of oomph. You can see how high of a score you can accomplish in this mode, as well as complete tasks such as seeing how fast you can get to each outpost or base on one map. Frankly, the tasks were pretty much run of the mill, but after the utter monotony that is the DW story mode, any deviation in the battle plan is most welcome, and you will find yourself checking out a few of the tasks just for a break. For those of you who are reading this and wondering how much of the old DW is still in place, do not fear for one minute about missing a thing. All the usual suspects are included, if you will. The food powerups, the weapon collection system, the in-battle defense, attack, and speed power ups, and even some of the battle cries are similar, if not the same. You will not be disappointed if you are looking for more Dynasty Warriors play that you know and love. Koei also provides a game here that will certainly keep you busy for as long as you want to be occupied. Each character can be played for at least 6 hours, if not more, and there at least 9 characters to play. This is all just one mode as well. Almost 40 hours of gameplay in just one mode is nothing to scoff at. Sure there is a copious amount of repetition, but that’s any hack and slash masher. The biggest omission from the game is -- you guessed it – still no online co-op gameplay. What the heck Koei is thinking in this day and age to not include a co-op online play mode in a hack beloved franchise hack and slash like DW is well beyond my comprehension. Koei even promised that DW6 would take the series in a new direction and revamp the game. Well, fission mailed on both fronts, Koei. Sure, the local two-player co-op is as much fun as it has always been, but some of us who have been playing DW since the beginning are now old enough to have families and cannot grab a buddy and beer for a few hours of play, much less a while night. Come on Koei, get with the times, this one is unforgivable. |
