Of course, there are downsides to this edition, as there are to any multi-sequel. The 50cc and 100cc class Grand Prix races are pretty straightforward, but there is no longer a MK64 co-op two-player GP mode, as some of you were wondering. It looks like that will not be making a return, at least for the foreseeable future. You can create your own GP tourneys in 2 player local mode, but those do not tie in with the normal single player progression. As I said, this is a minor gripe, at most.

When you hit the 150cc class GP though, you will instantly notice that this is an entirely different ballgame. Any racer will rely on Ai tricks and tactics at higher levels to make the competition that much harder, but MKW 150cc class seems to take it to a ridiculous level. You can leave someone in the dust in 12th position, and 3 minutes later they will be on your tail due to the craziest catch-up physics I have ever seen. Not to mention the fact that being in first place in a 150cc race means being constantly bombarded by anything and everything that 11 other racers can throw at you. Most times you do not even have the mere seconds to get back on track before you have “incoming” yet again. It gets frustrating, to say the least. The game has always felt a bit like the race was pre-determined at the end levels, but this is certainly the worst game in the franchise for that particular problem. Frankly, you will end up repeating the GP tournaments many times until finally, some bit of dumb luck or a lucky break will propel you to the top 3. Skill has little left to do with it towards the end of the 150cc GP races.

Everyone hates the dreaded blue shell, of course, but now you can add two items to the “dreaded” list. The first is a POW block that hits three times and then spins out all racers. It also drains you of any item you may have had at the time. Fun. There is also the new lightning item which frontrunners can use to get a bit of extra speed, but will end up hurting you if you cannot “tag” a nearby racer to pass along the “electricity,” if you will. As I said, the AI will use these items, and more, on you non-stop at the higher race levels, so be prepared for it or else you may end up with a smashed wheel.

Another clever addition is the ghost racing mode. This is where you can race ghosts of famous faces at Nintendo, complete with their Mii’s to see and all. People like Nintendo President Satoru Iwata will race against you head to head. Well, head to virtual head, that is. You can even upload your times once you are able to beat these ghosts so that the rest of the world can see just how great you are.
