Mario Kart Wii

Of course, there is more to Kart then just a single player mode! There is an entire multiplayer mode designed for offline play. This includes the battle mode, where players can go head to head. Up to four players can compete with each other without worry of using the internet, and we are given a huge list of tweakable settings to boot. You can set up GP tournaments with as many races as you like, you can tweak the actual power of some of the items and how they affect their targets, and you can even use your Miis if you like. One conspicuous missing mode is the four-player free-for-all battle mode. Why Nintendo did not bring back this favorite mode is beyond me. Also, there is no way to turn off certain items, such as the new POW block, which really interrupts the flow of the game in mp mode. Other than that, though, the multiplayer mode offers a huge range of games and options for any number of players. There are 10 tracks in this mode, and while some say that the battle maps are not designed to handle a lower number of participants, I say fine then. Just fill the spots with AI players, it is more fun with a full roster anyway.

There is one more mode that many of you have been waiting for. The online play mode in Mario Kart Wii is one of the better online experiences that the infant Wii network offers. It seems that Nintendo really did their homework this time around, as the experience is streamlined and fun. You can connect to a match easily, and the same goes for connecting to the online rooms. Super Smash was a letdown for players online, because of the lag and other issues. Mario Kart Wii does not seem to suffer from any of those problems, which is good because Nintendo really needed an online winner to show people they can compete with the big boys. While the first match I played online did have a bit of lag in the beginning, I never experienced it again. Combine the ease of use with the sheer amount of options that Nintendo was able to provide the online mode with, and you really have a fantastic online experience for any age.

What else can I say about Mario Kart Wii? Just like when the last MK game was released, there will be a slew of players who poo-poo it, and claim they will never like it as much as X version. The simple fact is, Mario Kart Wii brings a bunch of new features to the franchise, not the least of which is the Wii Wheel control, which I again urge you to use. The game looks and performs slightly better than the GameCube edition, and is worth the money, plain and simple. You and your friends can have hours of fun with the game, or you can have hours of fun without any friends (with the game, not just you alone, pervert). Go and do yourself a favor, and pick up Mario Kart Wii. The game will not disappoint, no matter what the guy with the Legend of Zelda tattoo says in that forum post.
