The three co-op missions put your character in a story-based level that comes complete with cut scenes, battles galore, and support for up to four players. This is likely the mode that will prove the most popular online, and is also the mode that has sparked the most anticipation among GTA players. The other modes of online play support up to 16 players, and are more akin to the single player game. In GTA Race mode, you start out with weapons and you must find a vehicle to grab in order to track down the other players and kill them as they try to run their laps. You can even set up a roadblock with cars you grab if you like. The possibilities are endless, just like in single player mode. Cops n’ Crooks is a team-based game where the crooks try to get their head honcho boss to the extraction point while the cops try to stop them. This, of course, leads to massive gun battles. Once again, the possibilities are near endless due to the interactivity of the city itself. Add to this the upcoming downloadable content, and you have an online mode that could have been a stand-alone game.

It is hard to put into words all of the little nuances that make up GTAIV. IGN was able to squeeze it into a 7-page review. I know no one wants to sit down and read 7 pages of how great a game is, so I will not bother even trying. Grand Theft Auto IV is almost an Americanized version of one of those Japanese dating/life simulation games. You can take the game in any direction you want – to a degree that is. If you want to spend most of your time hanging out with your cousin or one of your other friends, you can. If you want to mix it up with a date here and there, there is always Michelle who enjoys a good slap and a tickle. If you want to become the biggest hardcore gangster that Liberty City has ever seen, then you can go ahead and do that as well. In fact, you can even use your cell phone PDA to put the game into “sleep” mode. This basically puts the main storyline on hold so that automatic story events will no longer trigger like they normally would after a certain amount of time. You can then take literally as much time as you need to live real life in Liberty City before you continue on your path.

As I said in the beginning, Grand Theft Auto IV is not a perfect game. This does not mean it is not spectacular. GTAIV is likely to be remembered as one of the best games to grace the home consoles of this generation. It will be listed in the top 3 for sure. The game is worth purchasing for any gamer who can stand the massive amounts of sex and violence that goes hand in hand with a GTA title, but to be honest, this time around, you get to control how violent things get. In fact, that is the basic premise that makes GTA IV so fantastic – you are in control. You can choose to walk whatever path you like, in a virtual city that is so real that at times, it may make you think twice about doing those bad things simply because it just feels too real. Believable characters, impressive visuals, and above all else, a visceral sense of realism that few, if any games, have achieved, make Grand Theft Auto IV a truly awesome experience.
