As I said, it is hard to not spoil the storyline of a game like MGS4 when doing a review. In terms of story, I can try to tell you about the story’s structure, in order to help you understand what you are getting into. Firstly, I would recommend that anyone who is not the most die-hard MGS fan read up on the MGS story so far over at Wikipedia or another, similar site. This will give you a much needed refresher for the torrent of cameos, twists, and double-crosses that you are about to experience. Throughout the game, Snake will have flashbacks that go all the way to Shadow Moses (MGS1), which is tough to remember even if you played it through several times. The game really starts out with a bang, too, story-wise, as you will be treated to several “oh wow” moments within the first hour or two. This also brings us to another gripe that many fans have had since the first game – the cut scenes.

Yes, folks, there are cut scenes in the game that last 10, 15, 20, minutes and longer, even within the first 6 or 7 hours. You will often find that you have spent more of your in-mission time watching ridiculously good looking and pristinely produced cut scenes, rather than actually playing the game. Hideo Kojima has always made MG games in that fashion, though, so it really should come as no surprise. In true Hideo style, you control Snake for just a few seconds between cut scenes at times. Metal Gear Solid 4 is no exception to this rule. MGS2 and MGS3 also raised a ton of questions that were never answered, as well as introduced characters that were never fully explained. MGS4 supposedly wraps up most of these loose ends, and it also gives us a plausible story of Snake’s origins. According to some, the explanation given is too convenient and even a bit silly. I really am not going to get into it any further as I do not want to ruin it for anyone, including myself. The bottom line is that fans of the series are used to “playing a movie,” and those who are not fans of the series will be treated to a solid game, if they can get past the story that they will likely not understand fully.

In case the single player mode was not enough, MGS4 comes with Metal Gear Online as its multiplayer mode. Konami claims that the MGO that comes with MGS4 is a “starter pack,” even though it comes with five maps and multiple game modes. Once you create your character, you can jump into an existing game, or host your own.

The games tend to last only a few minutes, and the modes are pretty straightforward. Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and a CTF variant are all present. The maps take up to 16 players, and while there was no lag, it did take a while to get into my first game. This may be because the game had to load the initial textures and whatnot. That being said, the environments and models are truly impressive looking for an online game. The maps are detailed and, at some points, distractingly beautiful. While the online MGS game offers nothing that has not been done before, what it does offer is a great-looking and great-playing game mode that lets you challenge real life human beings in the Metal Gear universe. Also, those of you who got to play the MG Online beta will find yourselves right at home.
