Far Cry 2 does deliver in the variations of game play department. For example, when you actually engage in a firefight in the game, there is almost always more than one way to approach the enemy. You can run in, guns at the ready, and blow everyone away. Or, maybe you can strap explosives to a vehicle, and send it careening into the enemy camp. Or maybe, you can grab your machete, and silently stalk the enemies one by one. It is entirely up to you -- whatever gives you the most pleasure when dispatching the baddies. Of course, the best way is still the old way -- scout the area, formulate a plan, check your ammo, reload, and go. That's just me, though. One of the great additions to this sequel is the addition and implementation of fire. Instead of just being a pretty addition to explosions this time around, you can actually use it to your advantage. The way the fire moves in this game, you can tell the programmers really tried to make fire and flames move dynamically just like it would in the real world. This means you can literally construct a barrier of flame between you and the enemy. You will see what I mean fairly early in the game. One of the glaring downsides in FC2 is the enemy AI. To call it erratic is generous. Sometimes, an enemy (who apparently has been given bionic ears) will hear you coming as you rustle foliage 100 yards away. Yet that same enemy will run headlong into a wall of fire, thus roasting himself. I guess a bionic brain did not come with the bionic ears. This is certainly the biggest drag in the entire title, and it is a shame since great AI would have made the almost open world that much better. Of course, any Far Cry game has a story to go with it. It is reminiscent of the literary title Heart of Darkness, for the readers among you. You are ultimately after The Jackal, an arms dealer, and a psychotic one at that. He is the main force behind the country's descent into anarchy. It is the ultimate goal of the player to take The Jackal out. The path to this eventuality is long and winding though, and some parts are downright tedious. It helps that the game as two warring factions throughout -- the UFLL and the APR (don't ask me what they stand for, I forget). You can switch faction allegiances if you like, although the entire motive for the pointless war is never truly revealed. There are shades of gray galore in the game, just like real life wars. |
