Next up on our review schedule for the Xbox360 is Ridge Racer 6. This game is one of the games which made the US launch of the console but will be delayed in Europe until a later date. Is the game worth purchasing? Well let’s find out shall we.

I should not have to say this, but I will in case you are new to the Ridge Racer series. This is not a simulation driving game by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, you cannot get much more arcade-ish than Ridge Racer. Fans of the series will not be disappointed, and newcomers will enjoy the game if arcade driving is your thing. Let’s go through the game mode by mode.

The single player quest mode is called World Explorer. This is a bit different than previous games in the series as you can choose how many races you want to race in row. There are numbered races you can choose from, numbered 01 to 111. The races are not necessarily run on different courses each time, you basically race on the same 15 tracks and their reverses over and over. When you begin your quest, you start at the bottom of what can only be described as a flow chart filled with hexagons. You can select to run one race, or you can select to run up to 6 or 7 races in a row. You must always stop at certain specific marked races on the flow chart though, you cannot race from the beginning of the game to the end in one shot. As you make your way through the flow chart you earn prizes such as new cars and, well that is about it. There are over 100 bonus cars you can earn though, and the later ones include such futuristic designs as hovercrafts and rocket cars. You can even unlock a flying saucer piloted by the yellow muncher himself, PacMan.

“But how is the racing itself?” you ask. Well, anyone who is a fan of the Ridge Racer series do not worry, the racing is as unrealistic and drift-laden as ever! The classic driving style from all the Ridge Racer games is back, bigger and badder than ever. The game is the closest to its PSP cousin, Ridge Racers, as this is the first home console Ridge game to feature a nitrous boost meter. We also found that the game has no damage animations which was very disappointing. There is nothing like trading paint with a car you sideswipe, but instead you merely bounce off like rubber. We should not have expected damage of course, since it is Ridge Racer, but it would have been a nice touch we think. The game cranks along at 60FPS, so there is no problem there. The cars themselves could have used a tad more anti-aliasing we think, as it seems to be only 2xAA and there are visible jaggies.
