Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006 is on the review block today, and we break it down for you. Besides the overall impressions, we of course take you through the game in our mode-by-mode review style in classic GR fashion. Let’s jump right in.

Tiger is the only choice if you want to play a golf game on the new MS console. It will likely be the only choice for golf for a long time to come. Does this mean you should buy the game? The answer to that is a resounding “no.” The gameplay is no different from the Xbox or PS2 version of the title even though the team at EA designed this version from the ground up. New menus and animations are added but the core mechanics stay true. What makes it next-gen? Very little. The graphics are better than Xbox to be sure, but the frame rate suffers so much that even in some cut scenes you have to guess whether the slo-mo effect is intentional or just FPS slowdown.

Now let’s talk about the buttons for a bit here. The controls are set up in a very awkward way, the left bumper is the turbo/spin button, and the left stick is default to swing. Now, if you can imagine making a good shot with your left thumb while frantically using your left index finger to smack the left bumper then you, my friend, are a mutant 6-fingered freak. You can swap the swing stick to the right analog, which we highly recommend. That is all you can do in terms of customizing your controls.

Now, as you probably already know, there are only six courses total in this version of the game. This in and of itself is not necessarily a drawback, but considering you have to play the courses over and over to make enough points and money to unlock everything in the game, you get tired of the courses fast. The courses themselves are great looking for sure, we certainly think EA could have added some time of day changes or weather variations to break up some of the monotony. Another thing to note is that the six courses are not even available at the outset; you have to unlock them (by playing through the tour mode). The six courses are, for the record, Riviera Country Club, Pebble Beach, TPC at Sawgrass, Carnoustie, Pinehurst No. 2, and Turnberry. Although they have definitely been improved visually, the fact that you will find over twice that amount in the current-gen Tiger 06 eats away at you. Let’s get down to the mode by mode.
