Here are some things you need to know about the Xbox Live multiplayer modes. First of all, there is an 8 player limit on the online modes. This is certainly something that should have been upped to 16 at least as it leads to times when you can wander the map without seeing an enemy for minutes at a time. As you know, in a multiplayer FPS, minutes is an eternity (except in Tom Clancy games). Another thing that is pretty much inexcusable is the multiplayer lobby setup. When you join a multiplayer game on Xbox Live it throws you into a game lobby with eight other players and you wait until the game beings. Once the game is over, you are thrown right back to the Xbox Live main menu, there is no way to rematch! This is a definite shortcoming that needs to be addressed with a software patch if possible. The split screen mode supports up to four players, and the framerate does not even take a hit. Good job here. We do recommend you play on a big TV though, four people on a screen at once can be hectic, especially in this game. The system link multiplayer is pretty much the same as the Xbox Live multiplayer except for one glaring exception. It can support 16 players! This means all you who use the Kai or XBconnect service to play on the internet can play with more people in a game than Xbox Live players. As I said earlier, hopefully Activision will address this 8 player Xbox Live limit with a patch. There is even a single player menu choice in the multiplayer mode. Now you may be saying, that makes no sense, and you would be right. It seems that the multiplayer and single player modes of the game are completely different units. When you pick the single player menu choice in the multiplayer mode it just beings you back to the CoD2 main menu after a short pause. So, is this game worth owning if you have played the PC version? Yes, for sure. The beautiful presentation, the 5.1 surround and the fact that Activision will surely add downloadable maps and/or modes make it worthwhile. If you have not played the PC version then that goes double. The single player mode is great, and combined with Xbox Live replay value, it makes this title one of the best Xbox360 games available now. |
