Hitman: Blood Money

Hitman Blood Money is the most recent game in a long running series. How does it live up to the title and the previous installments? Well let’s find out.

The idea behind the game is very simple. You are a hitman, and you do what a hitman does… kill people for money. The missions are tied together through a string of CGI movies and audio clips.

The CGI movies are normally to continue the on going story. For the most part the CGI clips are in the present, while the missions take place in the past. The audio clips are normally the “briefing” before each mission. The briefing is normally when you find out who you are going to kill and why.

The missions themselves are what this game is about. The mission can take either a really long time up to 20 minutes, or a very short time of about 5 minutes, depending on how you do things. That is the beauty behind this game, not really the length, but all the different ways.

If you played the demo of the game you can not get a good sense of what the game is really like. The demo is the 1st real mission you do in the game; however it is a tutorial and very linear. After that mission you are free to do what you like in the following missions.

The following level for example has 2 targets, and there are numerous ways to dispose of them. One time I went in firing all my guns taking out almost everyone on that level. Then I went back and did it only killing my targets and never being seen. Doing the mission the second way netted me “Silent Assassin” ranking.

Rankings in the game are determined by how you carry out your mission. There are 2 separate bars at the end that help factor this really, one is noise and other is violence. If I used a bomb, of course my noise rating would go up. Like in the first instance when I killed everyone in the mission, including lots of bystanders, I got a ranking of Terrorist since my noise and violence levels were through the roof.

Some of you might wonder why you shouldn’t just blast your way through the game. Well there are 2 reasons to do each mission like a pro. First you can upload your scores on to Xbox Live for comparison with other users, secondly you get more cash.

Cash is important I found out towards the later levels. One of the key features not present in previous Hitman games is the ability to customize your weapons. While you can still collect weapons while carrying out missions, and use those weapons in later missions, customizing is an entirely new ballgame.

My Silverballer, the main gun your character has from the start, now has an extended clip, a very effective silencer, a small scope for aiming, and door piercing bullets. I could also choose to carry 1 or 2; I choose 1 for faster reloading rather than having big gunfights.

You have a few different weapons you can customize including a sniper rifle, MP5, M4, and Shotgun. Each weapon has for the most part similar upgrades but of course specialized for that gun only. To unlock new parts you have to complete missions, and as you are able to purchase new parts the prices start to rise to the point you have to start making choices. Like do you want to buy the silencer for the M4 for the next mission or upgrade your shotgun ammo capacity?

The good news for those of you worried about not upgrading all your weapons fully is that you can go back and redo previous missions. From the missions you only get the bonus money (this is why doing the mission correctly is important) added to your total funds after your first completion of that mission.
