While some people say that downloadable games are not real titles, and thus do not warrant reviews, we disagree here at GR. While some downloadable titles are just that, small, downloadable games that do not warrant more than a few minute’s glance, some downloadable games are much more. Take Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection on the Playstation 3. This downloadable title, while only available as of now overseas, is a full featured fighting game, the likes of which one would pay full price for on the Playstation 2. This, we think, warrants a full review, or as full as we can provide. Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, as you may or may not know, is the latest addition to the Tekken family. The game includes a total of 34 fighters, some of them brand new for this incarnation, and the PS3 version even features a playable Jinpachi. T5:DR is based on the latest arcade version of the popular fighter, and the PS3 downloadable copy has some very nice improvements which we will cover later. The game was released in the Playstation 3 store in Japan well before anyone had expected, and it was a very nice Christmas surprise for those of you who had the good fortune to be able to access it. Keep in mind, those of you who have not downloaded the game because you live in the US can now do so using our workaround. The game itself is much higher resolution than the arcade version, and even offers a full 1080p mode to those of you who have the capability to view games at that resolution. As I said, the graphics are certainly a few notches above the arcade version, and the difference is noticeable to anyone who has played any other version of Tekken on the PS2 or in the arcades. The textures have been sharpened and touched up, the characters even look slightly bigger, and the environments have been spruced up as well. Those of you with a good eye will notice a few things though, it is not hard to tell that this game is based off a last-gen fighter. Of course, it does not compare to the graphics of say Dead Or Alive 4 or Virtua Fighter 5, but for a downloadable title and a surprise one at that, they are more than adequate. For those Tekken fans among you who were waiting for an eye-gouging, sweet-looking, next-gen version of your favorite fighter, you will have to wait a little longer, I am sorry to report. But for those of you who enjoy playing Tekken and want the most graphically advanced version available today, I am happy to report you will be more than satisfied. |
