Sony’s big year-end gift (besides the surprise Tekken 5 download), was a stripped-down version of the now-cancelled Gran Turismo HD. The game is basically one track and 20 cars worth of high resolution GT goodness, and seeing as how it is a free download, can it really not be worth it? The game is a beefed up version of the build that was shown at the Tokyo Game Show this year. It includes one track and 10 cars to start. As you beat the target time with each car, the next car unlocks. Each car is progressively more powerful, and by the time you reach the tenth vehicle, you have unlocked the likes of Ferrari and Lotus. You start off with one car, as I said, the Suzuki Cappuccino, which can be raced on the one track included, Eiger Nordwand. Initially, you only have access to the time trial mode. Once you have beaten the target time with the Ferrari 599, the tenth car, the entire game opens up. You can now race the track in reverse mode, and you can also select the drift challenge mode. The drift mode awards points for longer drift turns. While this is fun, it is pointless because there is nothing more to unlock unfortunately. On top of unlocking drift mode, the game also provides you with 10 more cars, tuned versions of the original ten vehicles. This means they are made for racing, and specifically, drifting. There is nothing finer than a tuned Ferrari 599 folks, trust me on that. After taking about an hour to unlock everything, you can still play the game for hours because it includes a network ranking mode. If you think you have the mettle to take on the number one time in the world, by all means, give it a shot. I must say though, some of those top times are truly unbelievable; there must be a shortcut I am not privy to. The graphics in GTHD Concept are truly breathtaking. Polyphony Digital really shows off what the PS3 can do. The game is far improved over the Tokyo Game Show build, so if you have seen the TGS videos and have decided not to download this, I am here to tell you think again. No longer are there any frame rate issues, no lighting issues, and more blurry crowds. All those problems have been taken care of in true Sony fashion. Full environmental reflections are present in GTHD Concept, the frame rate is rock solid, and the mountains, oh boy, the mountains in the background have to be seen to be believed. |
