Ridge Racer games have been present at the launch of every Sony system to date, including the PSP. The franchise has been through so many different iterations at this point, gamers have been clamoring for something new, a new feature that fits well with the Ridge Racer formula. Well, Ridge 7 has that feature, as well as a few others that make the game one of the better PS3 launch titles. Those of you who, like I said, are looking for an evolutionary step in the franchise will hit the road and never look back. Ridge 7 is, even without the new addition, a great racing title that does what all Ridge Racers do – make racing fun. There are no real-world physics to speak of, just like the rest of the series, and there are no pesky distractions for spectacular collisions or damage physics. Of course, some may prefer the realism of Gran Turismo or Project Gotham racing, but for pure adrenaline filled speed-junky action, Ridge Racer is it, and R7 is no exception to the rule. As with most Ridge Racer titles, the player will spend most of his or her time perfecting the art of the drift turn, the staple of any good Ridge Racer. Most of the earlier tracks have a few turns and afford the player a chance to rest in between turns, but as the game progresses you will find yourself on tracks that are literally entirely made up of corners with no breathing room whatsoever, so you better learn to drift or go home crying. If you are having trouble there are included drift turn tutorials, but they are mostly movie-based and not interactive at all, i.e. not of great help. Like I said though, some later tracks seem as if you are racing on one big sheet of ice, so you better learn to drift. Remember, this is Ridge Racer folks, which means the car you are racing will always look as shiny and new as it did when you picked it before the race. Any collision with the side of the track or another car simply slows you down; it will not result in a spectacular crash a la Burnout, or result in a spin-out a la Project Gotham. The cars always remain pristine in Ridge Racer, and the fans of the series wouldn’t have it any other way. Keep in mind this does not mean you can simply bounce around the track and still do well. On most later tracks even a slight collision with anything at all will mean it is time to hit the restart button. |
